http://www.purerest.com/ These are Dunlop and are not the best value IMO but they are probably the most stringent in their independent chemical and purity testing which may be important to some. They do have an "econo" version as well which is better value.
http://www.flobeds.com/latex/index.htm They offer high quality and good levels of customization and have a zoned model. Many people like them because of their return and warranty provisions however I believe they are a little too high priced compared to some others.

Combination side sleeper back sleeper ... lower lumbar pain. 170 lb male. Spent 4-5 years in constant pain wrestling through 23 mattresses and 100 toppers. Couldn't even tell if there was an improvement in topper shuffling there was so much residual pain. I took the surgery leap maybe 4 months ago to isolate the comfort layer from the support layer (springs)... with sandman's help and example. Have been sleeping pretty well with 4 one inch layers over just the firm continuous springs from a Firm Serta Perfect sleeper.
You, like me and others with back pain... need firm to very firm as close underneath just enough or as little comfort layer as possible... soft at the top ... medium... to firm as you go down.
I chose the Serta for the continuous coil.. recommended for us with back pain.
You know...

Very briefly: I suggest you start with 4lb Eco Green comfort dreams 1 inch memory foam topper from www.overstock.com... which I have chosen over both the 14 ILD from SLAB, which I literally bought once... returned with $36 shipping charge from Atlanta.... and later came back and bought it again... looking for something slightly softer than the 20 ILD from FBM. I found the 14 ILD too soft... both times, now... and regret the expense. Not many here at this form have stated that they have, like or need 14 ILD, and as one of the most picky about soft, warn you that it is a small minority.
I have found...

I started out toward building an all latex mattress but first stacked up all the 20 ILD pieces I had from foambymail.com, which was 2 x2 inch and 2x 1 inch, for 6 full inches of "only" 20 ILD and laid it on the floor. I figured if I could get to "soft enough" with all latex, 20 ILD was the softest I could find at the time, before discovering SLAB and rocky mountain, where they had 14 ILD at outrageous prices, of course. SLAB 14 is $172, 1 inch, queen, where 20 ILD from FBM is $93.
6 inches of 20 ILD felt like a rock. Hurt shoulders, hips, back, everywhere. A rock. So I decided right there and then that throwing tons of money...

I know exactly what you are talking about as that is what I have been after for years now. The St. Dormier is a skirted mattress pad.. washable wool encased in stretchy 100% cotton, very loose skirt. Mine just arrived.. it does add some "firmness" but is probably a keeper for me. Before that I have been sleeping on just a sheet between me and my 1 inch top layer of 4 ILD eco green memory foam from Overstock.
All good recommendations from the others, here.
While I own and have tried the 1 inch of 14 ILD from sleep like a bear (not yet under the dormier but plan to tonight) ... under just a sheet, I found it too soft... and hence not supportive.
IMHO, the feel we are both looking for comes from just the right degree of...

Welcome and hopefully you will find your answers here! Most of us here have spent many thousand$ and tried many toppers.
I am 170 lb, 61 years young, combination side and back sleeper, and have lower back lumbar pain issues. Further, I don't like the sinking feeling of memory foam or the higher heat factor from it, because of its physical structure and the fact that it wraps and forms to your body and restricts air flow. I am among the hardest to get right I have actually owned or swap tried in home 23 mattresses and have tried over 100 toppers including latex, memory, polyurethane.
Since I no longer have the wrap of muscle I use to have, my "boney" hip and shoulder are very sensitive.

Just wanted to share an important update on my search ofperfect sleep through mattress surgery.
1) The cotton blanket I was using in place of expensive cover like St. Dormier isnt working. It stiffens the top layer (memory foam 4 lb) so much that it negates the conformative shaping quality and value provided by mem foam. It is my most critical layer.
2) My nearly perfect for me combo of (top to bottom) 1 inch 4 lb eco green memory foam (overstock.com), 2 x 1 inch 20 ILD latex foambymail.com, 1 inch of supersoft poly foam from foamdistributing.com on top of Serta Perfect Sleeper Auburn Firm (springs only, cut off the top and took out the 3 foam layers)... was temporarily:
Made unsleepably, uncomfortably firm... by changing out one, one inch bottom layer, 3 inches down from...

So, we laid on the very soft pillow top at Sams that cost like $599. Then I read something on Amazon about not getitng those because you can't flip them. Then, I figured I'd better do some research and came onto this site. Wow - I had no idea how little I knew.
(By the way - I was talking to my wife about these...
