Re: Stearns & Foster Plush Euro-top VS Serta iComfort Revolution - Good_Sleep

$2800 for an unproven product is a lot of money.  What I mean, is that the icomfort is very new to the market.  Only time will tell if it's a proven product.  Most memory foam mattresses are made to look good and have some great selling story, but don't live up to the hype (Sleeps cool, super long warranty, etc.).  If thats your choices (Stearns or icomfort) you may want to stick with the more traditional stearns for $1000 less.

I think Tempurpedic has a couple of choices close to that $2800 range with the adjustable base. As far as I'm concerned (yes, I'm biased, it's what I own), the Tempurpedic is the only time proven memory foam out there.  I personally know people that have had their Tempurs, for close to 15 years.  They are not cheap, but they are a long term investment.

Re: need recommendations for coil mattress for adjustable bases - slpngoc

Check with retailer, but I believe pretty much all the Simmons mattresses are fine on adjustable bases.  I've been told most S brand coil spring mattresses are fine on adjustables.  You'd want to avoid any old school coil mattresses that have border rods in the mattress.

Simmons have individual coils and should do fine on adjustable.  I've seen a Stearns and Foster which has individual coils on an adjustable base, but there's a lot of heft in the mattress, so it doesn't conform really well to the adjustable base.  To be safe, it would seem smart to test the mattress on adjustable in the store.

Foam mattresses will conform to adjustables.  But I didn't like the feel of my all latex mattress on adjustable.  On box spring, it was springy.  On solid top adjustable, it felt much deader. ...

Ginger,

I had a Stearns and Foster innerspring plush bed, brand new from Sears for about 4 weeks in June.  They had warned it would firm up after a week or so and it did.  I would imagine that firm Beautyrest firmed up quite a bit and is making things worse.  Think I mentioned before, but I have a not so good right shoulder, injury, arthro surgery years ago.  anyrate, so in July, I exchanged to a very plush iComfort memory foam mattress. Didn't take long to notice there was something special about a memory foam mattress - I could lay much longer on that right shoulder. I would always turn off it quickly before.

Funny thing is I tried a $100 Sleep Innovations 2.5" gel memory foam topper over my latex bed.  Not good.  It slept hot, I sunk in and pressure relief / comfort...

I used a Costco 2.5" Sleep Innovations gel memory foam topper for one night on top of my all latex bed .... and that memory foam slept HOT.  I sank mostly right through it and pressure relief wasn't great.

Can't speak for the mattress, but top layer is same as the topper I used.

To the OP, I think the Stearns and Foster / Sealy patterned 'box springs' are better than the Serta / Simmons I've seen.  Reason is the S&F's have a consistent 4" spacing between vertical support rods.  The Serta's box has an 8" gap in the middle support rods from head to toe (at least on the twin boxes).  There are surface rods that run head to toe, but the vertical support is 8" apart.  The result - sag in hips up to shoulder area.  That's what happened on my iComfort twin box...

Tempurpedic Cloud bed on Advanced Ergo base vs. SleepEZ 10000 blended Talalay Latex (long post) - slpngoc

This is initial quality and opinions of a Tempurpedic Cloud (regular) on Advanced Ergo adjustable base and / vs. a SleepEZ 10000 blended Talalay all latex mattress on box spring.  I've had the Cloud for two weeks and slept on the SleepEZ for 4 weeks.  I've just set them up in two different rooms and one or the other in on a potential chopping block for return, or I might keep both.  The Tempurpedic gets the prize for most comfortable so far, but the SleepEZ is quite good also.

I found both of these mattresses are more comfortable than a Stearns and Foster traditional mattress I had for 4 weeks (it had individual coils, was the entry level Sears calls 'Hearthstone'.)

Tempurpedic Cloud -

Pros:

* Very soft and comfortable.  Pressure relief for hips and shoulders is unmatched on any other bed I've ever slept on. ...

I ended up calling SleepEZ and was recommended a Soft/Medium/Firm latex combo in the 8" special. This is apparently a natural Talalay topper with Dunlop mid & bottom.

I do have a solid foundation, but I was thinking I could just throw a couple blocks of wood down the sides and lay some slats across to make my own 'foundation' on top of the solid plywood base. Would this be enough to keep the good feel of the latex? The guy at SleepEZ seemed to think it didn't matter - that latext breathes on all sides.

- What was the makeup of the latex bed layers that you found to not be very good when on a solid foundation? Should I get something even softer than the Soft/Medium/Firm?

Re: longevity of memory foam - slpngoc

I've had 5 mattresses in home since May this year.  All of them 3 to 4 weeks.  Every one of them forms 'normal body impressions'.  I can press on different areas, and they all become a little softer in the area where hips and torso lay.  This includes memory foam, latex and a Stearns and Foster innerspring with its quilt batting and regular comfort foam.

I've said it before and here it is again - nothing was easier on my right shoulder than memory foam.  The all latex had good support for sure, but pressing down on it, I could feel the immediate response and resilient pushback.  It was fairly easy on my left side, but too much pressure on my right.  I suppose most people without a bad joint can sleep on all latex.  If I were to decide against the TP, I would go back to the...

We have a Stearns and Foster box spring set! Glad to hear they are pretty good :) It goes with the S&F bed that we have taken apart. Waiting for latex to get here (if my husband actually finally placed the order) -- then hopefully we will have a bed that feels at least semi nice -- as opposed to the terribly crappy we have right now.

One thing I really don't like about the typical box spring these days is there tendency to sag if the center slat is not supported which I think is often the case in twins, fulls and kings.  I'll explain why -

Typical box spring has a pretty simple construction - at bottom, a perimeter of wood slats...

Stearns & Foster Plush Euro-top VS Serta iComfort Revolution - gdulaney
Oct 4, 2011 10:01 AM

Husband - late 40's, moderate body frame (he's at an appropriate weight for his height)...he has some minor lower back pain (age-related, not injury-related)

Me - mid-40's, need to lose some weight.... I have GERD (acid reflux) and restless legs

Our current mattress is OLD.... it's a pillow-top queen and has been a very good mattress. We recently went on a cruise and the mattress on the ship was so comfy. Neither of us was achy in the morning and both of us slept the night through. It's listed as a Sealy Posturepedic Premium Plush Euro-top mattress.

The closest I've found is the S&F Clearbrook Plush Euro-top. We were about to buy when my husband sat (then layed) on the iComfort Revolution....

We've been mattress hunting and had narrowed it down to a Stearns and Foster Plush and then my husband sat down on the iComfort. He really likes the Revolution with the adjustable base. The price was outlandish, but I told the sales associate that if she could get it down to $2800 out the door, including delivery, set up and haul away, we'd do it. I NEVER thought she'd be able to go that low. I seriously underestimated the desire to sell a bed.

So.... first --- we haven't taken delivery yet....so it's not a "done" deal....  Did we get a good buy?  Is it better than the S&F (which is not adjustable nor does it have a built in massager).

Advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you :)
