Thanks a lot for the info. I had come to believe that bonnell coils were the cheapest so it's nice to know differently. Makes sense really.

And thanks especially for the info about the pocket coils. If I was going in the direction of springs it would almost certainly be pocket coils and for anyone going in that direction I think it would be really important to know how they were made since they can "go wrong" more easily than other types if they are not well designed and constructed.

From what I understand, the Simmons coils are untempered. Just to add to the information in this thread, what are your thoughts about untempered coils vs tempered coils.

Technically speaking Simmons pocket coils are tempered...

Many people on here seemed to be helped by about 2" of latex, from what I have read.

I haven't owned a Simmons.  My parents have one in their guest room.  It's firm or ultra firm with little foam, and I know that it softened up lots from when it was new.   My parents Simmons also sags in the middle now, even with extra supports under it.

I've read lots of complaints that the Simmons goes too soft within 2-3 months.   Maybe yours still hasn't broken in.  I've read lots of complaints that the Simmons goes "too soft" within 2-3 months, compared to how it was new.

I have an Imperial Bedding Orthopedic Ultra Firm model #49 Bonnell innerspring mattress and spring foundation set.  Now, that set is rock hard firm in full size, and it also has little padding.  It's more firm than...

This is an old thread, but I'll also nominate Original Mattress Factory's  Orthopedic Extra Firm and Ultra Firm,  with the extra foam cylinders (one if not two rows) around the edges.   I have a friend who weighs over 400# and that mattress and spring set has held up to him for over 3 years now.

Thanks.  I'll make a note to check the construction before I buy.  I am leaning toward buying a set from Original Mattress Factory.  It's in the $700 range.  But I'll still looking at other options.  Or trying to.  It's hard to do from a small town in a rural region.  We have furniture stores but they all carry the same "S" brands that everyone here is swearing at, lol.   I have to go to Pittsburgh or Cleveland or MIchigan to find anything else.

I have really given up on all of the major brands, because they are all too much foam piled onto a spring, and are single side, and I want an old fashioned 2 sided innerspring mattress with not frills and years of durabuility.   People are ditching their big name sets after only 3 years or less.   Complaints abound about Simmons Beautyrest softening up too much within weeks.  I'm looking at The Original Mattress Factory, Carlisle Bedding, and Imperial Bedding, because those are the smaller companies in my region.

Getting the Aerus back in the box was a daunting task that required the use of patience, body weight, and force!

Okay, I can see the reasons behind going both firmer and softer.  The 2.5" Aerus seemed like less hip and shoulder pain, but more back pain (probably from sinking in too much).  Conversely, the 2" of 21 ILD resulted in only hip and shoulder pain, with no back pain.  Also, the surface below is a "Cushion Firm" from Original Mattress Factory, and it's pretty firm.  I think the coils are 12 3/4 guage, so there's not much give there.  I see the logic behind going up to 3 inches, but would really like to avoid having $600 - 700 invested in latex if at all possible.  Since MF is out of the question, I'm thinking of using up to 2" of latex, and perhaps a different topper like wool,...

Latex topper advice - chattvol

I am experiencing some hip, shoulder, and neck pain.  Mostly, the neck pain and occassional tingling arms are the most bothersome - neck pain the most painful of the two.  I sleep on my side, but I am not sure if how I lay on my arm is normal or not.  I sort of keep my lower arm pointing straight towards my headboard, with my head resting on my shoulder and arm.  I have a Luxury Firm Orthopedic mattress from Original Mattress Factory, and it's only a few weeks old.

I am currently using 2.5" of Aerus 5 lb memory foam, which seems to aleviate the hip and should pain.  However, my neck is killing me!  I have read that most side sleepers need a high loft pillow, however, I don't know if that is true for side sleepers who sleep with their head on...

Latex Mattress, Latex Top on Innerspring Mattress, or Build Our Own? - kyley

Hi All,

First post here!  I just discovered this forum and it's nice to see a group of knowledgable people helping each other out with something as difficult as mattress shopping!  We've been looking at all types of mattresses and found we don't like Tempurpedic, like the Sleep Doctor - Dr. Breus all latex bed (know anything about this bed - type of latex, will it get body impressions, etc.?), and like the Sealy / Simmons innerspring with latex topper beds.  But, I like the idea of an all-latex bed, yet they're pricey, I don't know what type / quality of latex is used in these and whether it will hold up, and I hear horror stories (user reviews) of the mattresses developing cavities / body impressions that lead to people sleeping in a valley...  I want to avoid that!

Anyway, I'm intrigued with the comments here about things...

A few mattresses that you will often find in regular stores that are worth trying out (they have all or mostly latex in the top at least) are the Simmons "natural response elite" (not the natural response), "Pure latex bliss", and "Sealy embody". There are many others but it will save you hours and hours of time if you phone and ask "do you have any latex mattresses with less than an inch of polyfoam in the top layers". Be very specific here as it is a waste of time to go to a store where most of the upper layers are polyfoam, even if they "call" them latex.

A few places that are "somewhat" near you besides regular stores you may already know about are:

I lay on the OMI terra bed and it was absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately wonderful here meant insanely expensive. The other OMI beds I lay on were also very nice but I believe also overpriced and not as nice as the Terra. While I acknowledge that their level of "organicy" (if there is such a word) is probably higher than any other manufacturer, their price definately shows it.

I have done a lot of research into latex beds and I discovered that many smaller or medium size mattress manufacturers will sell direct to the public at prices lower even than Sleep EZ which in turn has lower prices than flo-beds and savvy rest. The problem with this is that most of them will make a custom bed for you but they do not have "layer exchanges" like Sleep EZ or Flo beds or savvy rest or foam sweet foam...
