Let me just say that I am NOT a salesperson.  I, too, have been looking to others for advice on a new mattress and/or pillow for a while.

Two years ago, we broke down and bought a Tempurpedic.  In the store, it was nice and soft.  We didn't buy the top of the line, but the way it appeared in the store, it seemed we did not need to.

When it arrived, it really gave off a smell.  That smells lasted for days! Also, my husband and I aren't heavy people (110 and 150).  We would lie on the mattress and it wouldn't give at all.  Very weird and hard to explain.  After living with it for a couple of...

My new bed arrived this morning and while it doesn't seem to have quite as much "give" as the ones I laid on in the showroom, I don't believe it will be uncomfortably hard to sleep on ... I guess I will know more tomorrow!

There is absolutely no smell whatsoever with this bed.

There is, however, a glitch: the delivery people that Sears uses had never seen these adjustable bases before, and were telling me that they could not set my bed up and that Sears was going to have to send someone else -- but this was after my old Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress and box springs had been carted out to the truck and gotten all wet (and probably pretty dirty, too) in the pouring...

Re: What is an "S brand mattress" ? And are Macy's beds marked WAY up or are they really higher quality? - slpngoc

'S' brand refers to the big three - Sealy, Simmons and Serta (Stearns and Foster is part of Sealy).

Macy's beds - I've seen Posturepedics, Perfect Sleepers, Beautyrests, S&F's, 'Hotel Collection'.  Around memorial, they had 2011 model Posturepedics up well over $1k in twin.  Then in July, they had same beds well under $1k.  Weird as Memorial Day is thee sales time of the year.

Macy's sells multiple brands.  I don't think they are 'higher quality' than like, Sleep Train here.  Macy's Stearns and Foster's are the same as Sleep Train's, just different names.  That's a well known trick used in the mattress industry.

One huge thing about buying a bed ----  Make sure you can get a refund on your first set, know the terms and how much restocking fee if not satisfied.

Untraditional(?) mattress storage and use - databody

Hi--

I'm moving into a very small studio and thought that to save space I would sleep on my mattress without a bedframe and lean the mattress against the wall vertically during the day (and maybe hide it behind a shoji screen or something).

My only concern is that continually leaning and 'un'leaning the mattress against the wall will somehow damage it if I do this sort of thing nearly every day.

Is this concern realistic? Would you worry about damaging your mattress if you leaned it against the wall every day? The mattress is a Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress, if the info is applicable.

What are your thoughts?

It is time to call it quits on our 16-year-old king size pillow-top mattress. We have extended the life of this mattress with several toppers on it over the years; the first one was a feather bed that was pleasant until it started excreting white feathers that swirled like snowflakes on our the hardwood floors. It was quickly replaced with a memory foam topper, which has been on the bed for the past two years and has done much to keep the old bed comfortable, but still ... it's time.

With the Labor Day sales last weekend it seemed a great place to start, and so I found myself staring at the ceiling of the Sears showroom from the iComfort beds. I was drawn to memory foam due to our good experience with our mattress topper, and to the iComfort two reasons in particular:  its promise to "sleep...

FWIW, DH and I just bought a split king SleepEZ Select Sleep 10000 in the natural dunlop 2 weeks ago and are very happy. He is 5'8" 180 and I'm 5'5" 145. Although he prefers firm and I like cush, both of our layers are SMF. We used to have a 10-year old queen Serta Perfect Sleeper with pillowtop, but went with a larger mattress because he started twitching a few months ago. It got old really quick taking turns on the sofa. We definitely wanted motion isolation and as natural as possible. TP out of the question because of the chemicals and off-gassing. We are in LA and Foam Sweet Foam was too far to drive. Was slightly apprehensive purchasing a mattress online, but reading the rave reviews between SleepEZ and FloBeds, plus the return policy swayed us.  Went with SleepEZ because they were less expensive and because we...

Hi Francis,

You mean the coils will sag? Do you have a Berkeley Ergonomics mattress? If so, I am very curious of your experience!

Hi Dallasgirl!

No I do not have said mattress.  I had a Simmons (not pocketed coils) or maybe it was a Spring Air.  Anyways, it was very firm with very little upholstery on top.  I bought a talalay topper from foamorder.com and it slept great, for a few years.

The matress had sagged, the box spring had not, it looked like the springs had just compressed.  I only paid 500. or so for the set and now sleep on a Serta perfect sleeper.  I like the Serta, has just the right amount of padding (it was...
