Re: So many choices (would like latex mattress preferably not go over $2000) - KimberlyH

Hi Dave,

When you first get started looking at latex, things can be confusing.  This is because there are many variables to latex:

1) The manufacturing method.  The oldest method is called Dunlop and a "newer" (but still around for decades) method is called Talalay.  You can read about the difference in the manufacturing method here:

Some people prefer Dunlop latex, some people prefer Talalay latex.  Some people think that Dunlop latex, being denser than Talalay latex, is more supportive.  I have tried mattresses made from both types of latex, and I don't believe this is true - provided you get the right firmness.

2) The type of latex.  Basically there are two types of latex:
     a) 100% natural botanically grown latex
     b)  Blended latex (typically 70% synthetic and 30% natural)

Read about the differences here:

Here again you will find a wide range of opinions regarging what is "best."  Some people are purists and...

It does seem too good to be true, and I'm also waiting for reports from those who bought it and how they like it.  The burning question in my mind is . . . . what's the source of the latex, and is it that cheap stuff with fillers?...

Jim, Thanks for the idea of more thinnner layers.   I hadn't thought of that approach.   My only concern is if several thin layers might move or shift more on the mattress.   My original latex mattress is sealed in a cotton/wool cover so I will be laying the layers on top of it.  So far, the 2 inch memory foam stays in place after I removed it's slippery cover and placed it on a non skid pad on top of the mattress.  This is covered with just a good fitted mattress pad and fitted sheets.    I'm now thinking of ordering a 2 inch "medium" and 1 inch "soft" from SleepEZ mattress components in the 100% Natural Talalay Latex.   The "soft" would be kind of like the top layer that Flobeds uses.

Welcome to the forum!  & N.M. the H.'s.  H./'s gonna H.

Latex-Visco hybrid huh?  Latex "Memory FOam" hybrid?  I've only thought of those as mutually exclusive products. petro visco thermo responsive foam vs. straight latex foam either synthetic or natural, which doesn't compress any more or less when it heats up. So you kind of had me, then you lost me, as far as "latex memory foam", because i think "if it's latex, it's not memory foam!', but i'm still researching (i.e. i'd love to learn more)!

Re: Help with softer Latex topper than FBM "Soft" 20 ILD on top of firm Stearns Foster Luxury Firm? - shovel99

HI Folks,
Some more twists and turns.  When I wrote this, I had the S & F English Meadows Luxury Firm ( think this is Macys version of base model S&F which I bought from the good folks at mattressbarn.com in atlanta).  I tried an Ikea TVEIT topper which is a 1" latex... 20% natural 80% synthetic topper in a nice zippered cloth bag... thinking I could return it if I didn't like it.  It felt more like 2 inches of folded fabric and was not supportive.  When I got it back to IKEA, they refused a return and gave me store credit.  Desperate not to lose $200... I took their 2 3/8 inch memory foam topper called Tajford.... $250.... which felt great in the store... very firm, supportive.  Turned into a nightmare in less than 2 hours.... the usual memory foam problem... deep hole, hot, hard, slow recovery that I...

Hi everyone- I wanted to update you on my mattress choice. I decided to go with the SleepEZ 8500 blended talalay. Soft top layer, medium middle, and firm bottom. I decided to go this route after talking to someone at SleepEZ (Shawn, I presume) and trying out an Englander Nature's Finest all natural latex mattress. Although Flobeds seemed to have a slightly better product (labeled latex and unlimited layer exchanges) I couldn't justify the extra $1,000 for their mattress. I am still curious about Essentia, but was a little nervous about purchasing from them since I couldn't find anyone who has tried their mattress. Anyway, thank you for the help. I can't wait for my new mattress. -Michelle...

all im going to suggest/add is that if you are considering latex based on the 'hypoallergenic' properties, resistance to moulds, bacterial growth, dust mites...etc.  Do not consider buying a Sealy spring free.   These benefits of latex are specifically referring to the properties of natural rubber.  If you want the full benefit of these properties you should really consider buying 100% natural latex.  Sealy uses 100% synthetic (SBR) rubber which offers basically none of those benefits and in addition to this the mattresses are always quilted with a top layer of polyurethane foam, which is another thing you want to avoid if you want these benefits.  Also anything you mix into natural rubber will degrade these qualities, so synthetic blends also lose most of this benefit.

As far as durability goes most of that is misinformation started by manufactuers like Latex International because they primarily only make synthetic blend rubber.  If...

I am very skeptical whether this is actually all 100% natural sourced rubber.  for the cost it really doesn't seem possible.  and there are a lot of companies out there that tend to mislabel things, I have seen a lot of pillows that were blended latex come in packaging that says 100% natural latex, or "Natural Latex" and then just list the benefits. ...

This Costco 10" queen latex mattress sounds like a fantastic deal. In contrast, the quotes I received from Land & Sky for their queen mattresses ranged $1500 (6" latex core "Meadow") to $2000 (9" latex "Rainforest"). Lifekind quoted me $2400 for their standard "Euro" model. Their "Trio" was $3400. The Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company queen latex mattresses range $1300 to 1400, and their all cotton/wool futons pads run $400-500 or so. Now, I'm sure those companies craft a far more polished and organic product than the Sleep Science model Costco is selling. However, 10" of natural latex for $1000 shipped/installed free and with the legendary Costco return policy can't be beat.

Anybody received theirs yet? How is it?

What's the catch? Is the zippered case doused in nasty flame retardants? Is the "natural" latex actually 80% synthetic? Does the mattress smell bad and take forever to off-gas / outgas?...

i'm considering ordering this bed before the sale is over in a week.  i can't decide whether i should just get the mattress and use my old box spring with or without a plyboard.  the problem is that i can't order the matching foundation later if i change my mind.  not too sure that it would be easy to find a suitable foundation separately, later.  would appreciate any suggestions....
