Still waiting for my washable wool/cotton Natura mattress pad. That might add some temperature moderation as well.

Sandman, can you please report back after you try this out? (Same with the cotton/bamboo sheets?)

I thought I was done spending $ on my new bed, but now that fall has come and I've got my down-alternative comforter on the bed, I'm waking up hot & sweaty. I think my options are:

a) change the programmable-thermostat settings so the heat doesn't come on until after I get up (wake up to a cold house; cheapest option and first one I'll try);

b) ditch the comforter and buy a lighter-weight comforter or a medium-weight blanket (I'm using a low-thread-count cotton duvet cover, which I just bought because the flannel cover was way too hot);

c) ditch the polyfill/cotton mattress pad and get a wool/cotton pad or an Outlast pad*, or something...
Re: jiggly latex helped by mattress cover? - KimberlyH

I'm not sure what the answer to your question is going to be.  My latex bed does not feel "jiggly," and actually that's a feel I would appreciate more of - I think.  Although "bouncy" might be a better word.   I have three, 3" layers + a 3" topper.  My latex bed has a knitted cotton and wool mattress cover, which I like very much (although I'm not sure about the sturdiness of the zipper, presumeably I won't be doing too much zipping and unzipping).  My bed is from Flobeds.

It may be that the jiggly feeling you don't like has more to do with the medium firmness you ordered rather than the lack of a mattress cover.  If you would like less jiggliness (lol if that's even a word), I would suggest changing the medium core for a firm core, and having the soft topper over that.  I would...

Cardamons,

Good luck with finding the right combo for you. I deal with sever pain/health issues, so I know the challenge, and can relate to what you said re: the relationship between sleep and pain (which seems to go both ways, at least for me, and the worst is terrible pain and no sleep at all!)

I've mentioned in other threads what I seem to need--soft on top but very supportive underneath (current set-up is soft, medium X-firm natural talalay). Not that it's a "magic bullet"; I still have lots of pain, however, I"m not waking up every 5 minutes from it. And I'm sleeping better.

Hi Catlover,

I'm still playing around with the layers, but will post back when I have it "finalized". I know what you mean about the choice of dunlap with Savvyrest, and thus your decision to go that route. That was a consideration for me to. I need a lot of support for back problems, but also a lot of softness for nerve problems (especially cause I sleep on my side mostly).

Right now I'm sleeping on (top to bottom) soft, medium, X-firm talalay (all-natural). The other 2 configurations I've tried the most are soft, firm,firm and medium, medium, X-firm. I actually prefer the latter in terms of support, but still get some shooting nerve pain when on my side for any length of time. (I have a pretty complex health situation going on though). I did briefly try the zoned layer, but did not care for it. For comparison...

I think Savvy Rest charges shipping both ways (as opposed to only 1-way like FloBeds does) AND, they don't vacuum pack the latex, so boxes are twice as large. Also dunlap is a bit heavier than talalay (the natural in each type; don't know anything about the blended). Hence the higher shipping charges.

I have slept on both all natural dunlap and talalay (however not a bed with both), and they do feel quite different (even if ILDs are the same). Unfortunately I did not have 2 beds side by side to try when I was researching, nor were my past dunlap mattresses comparable in depth or ocnfiguration to my current talalay one. And except for my last bed, which was very thin dunlap, the others, albeit much thicker, were literally decades ago (eg: I had a Sears dunlap mattress through childhood, and then another dunlap one, don't know what brand,...

Hi Catlover - that's awesome to hear that you guys have been doing some stomach-sleeping without any regrets in the AM! I miss sleeping on my stomach, as odd as that sounds... :)

I will try to email you the directions on how to post an image just by typing, and I'll explain it as simply as you need me to! No worries there! I've had to explain stuff to my poor confused Mom and Aunt so lots of experience there! ;)

Again, I know I've said it before, but just want you all to know how much I value your advice and opinions, especially those of you who untiringly and patiently explain stuff and offer your experiences time and again to those of us who are somewhat new to all this! Thank you!

Hey mattressnewbie!

I'm wondering whether those of us...

Hi Linda!
I enjoyed reading your comments and hearing of your personal experience with sleeping on one of the old Sears dunlop mattresses!

Your points about Savvy's shipping were well expressed and make sense. I'd forgotten that dunlop weighs more than Talalay, and if they are charging both ways, then $86 for a twin xl makes sense!
Yes, Savvy doesn't compress their latex, so boxes are larger too. Perfect logic all around - you go girl!

While I sure understand the concern about Savvy's "no returns - exchanges only" policy, the reason I went with them is that I was 100% certain that we wanted latex, and knowing that they offer both Talalay and Dunlop (both 100% natural), almost made it impossible for us to go with anyone else.... I knew I wouldn't be returning, and had the option to go to Talalay if the Dunlop proved to be too firm, but...
Re: Cooler memory foam? - sandman

I tried the Sensus memory foam 1 layer lower, to see how that was. I still got somwhat hot, and it lost some of the memory foam feel as well. So, I am planning to sell the 2" of Sensus foam. I ordered 1" of mem-cool 4lb memory foam from Overstock to see how that works. I would prefer the Aurus by Foamex, but that only comes in 2" or greater (in 4lbs or 5lbs.). Plus cost of $200+, and not sure it will work any better than the mem-cool. Unfortunately, Overstock is out of Aurus.

Meanwhile, I went back to the convoluted latex and changed the middle layer to firm for xfirm. That seemed to help with the hardness issue, and definitely not as hot as the Sensus. Still seemed like enough support. That may end up being my best...

Thanks. I ordered a new mattress cover that has wool tufting instead of polyester. That may help some. I think my sheets are a pretty high thread count (and fairly new unfortunately), so I may have to rethink those as well.

I having been researching the Aerus Natural memory foam by Foamex. It supposedly is cooler and circulates air better. Comes is different densities, 3lb., 4lb, 5lb.,etc. Hard to find the right inches and density though at a good price.

Have not found too many reviews comparing its temperature moderation to "regular" memory foam. Maybe be worth a try.
