Re: FoamByMail Latex Mattress Help Desperately Needed! - cloud9

The holes in the LI Talalay latex I received from SleepEZ were all very uniform. There were no discolorations, but there were small craters where bits of foam was missing. This is common in latex. It shreds just handling it, which is why you want to keep it covered and avoid touching the latex directly as much as possible.  Like Lynn I also have a Brylane topper which was manufactured by Dunlopillo in Enland for NaturaWorld. It is also a very nice piece of latex.

Unless you get a piece of foam with big tears and huge chunks missing, I wouldn't worry too much about absent holes, small craters and little shreds. That's just latex. If you had bought it sealed inside a cover like a standard mattress you'd only know if you were comfortable or not. You wouldn't know what the foam looked like inside....

They both use synthetic fibers on top of the latex core that causes indentations.
For the same price, you can buy a high quality Natura with all natural fibers.
you can ask them for the nearest location to you.

It has been my experience that you cannot tell whether its Talalay or Dunlop by looking at it.
I don't know anything about the company he refers to, but I do know you can't tell by a picture.

latex and motion transfer - electracat
May 9, 2009 11:09 AM
I'm still trying to figure out the answer to this: Does a latex bed have any motion transfer? This is my most important concern regarding a mattress, and i've seen differing opinions...Seems like the natural latex products DO, and synthetic DO NOT (?)...Everything I read, ad-wise, suggests that they have absolutely no motion, but some posts i've read suggest they're springier than i initially thought. Can anyone clear this up for me? Thanks so much...And, i hope i don't get yelled at again...;) ...

Take a look at www.foamorder.com for their NaturalSense mattress; it's dunlop. They offer a block of NaturalSense without fire retardants that can be cut to any size.  It's less expensive than their regular mattresses. They also sell a variety of mattress covers, toppers, etc.  Sleepez is another company that sells Dunlop mattresses; prices are higher, but they have a good reputation and many posters on this forum have purchased from them. Good luck....

I'll address the compliance issue. As a former business owner who complied with regulations, permits and licensing requirements for food service, tobacco products, beer, etc., I appreciate porchdog's comments about FBM's noncompliance with fire retardant regulations. I had wondered about this myself and it's probably one reason for FBM's low prices. To this I would add: a low marketing budget (one of the cheesiest web sites I've ever seen), miniscule budget for packaging materials (cardboard packing boxes look like landfill rejects), and a small variety of latex densities. Having spent about six months researching latex mattresses, I have learned that many mattress companies attain compliance by using a barrier system such as a wool filled mattress cover, since wool is a natural fire retardant. Some companies, as porchdog noted, require doctor's prescriptions to sell nontreated mattresses. While legal, I consider it a CYA ploy to enable most people to skirt the regulations. Had FBM offered a wool filled cover at an upcharge, I personally would have paid for...

I'm not sure why Gary is attacking FBM without ever seeing/feeling their product in real life.  Maybe he's one of those people that needs justification for paying more.   I was apprehensive about ordering from them seeing how lame their website is and their vague answers.  The other thing that makes it even tougher to pull the trigger, is all mattresses are way over priced even FBM foam if you really think about what you are getting, it's just a block of foam not some high tech electronics device.  But I took the plunge anyways, figured I'd learn my lesson the hard way if it sucks.

I just recently ordered their 2" core to make sure I like it then ordered the 6" latex core after I was satisfied with what I received.  It's definitely not perfect and personally I don't care as I'm not putting these things on display and I'll never look at the...

Sleep Science Celeste? - robdmb
May 5, 2009 6:36 PM
Ok... I'm editing this post because I decided to scrap the Big "S" companies. Now I am down between three choices. I am looking at Flobeds, Sleepez (would prob. lean toward Sleepez cause of price) and the Sleep Science Celeste which is offered by Costco.  I like that Costco essentially has a risk free return policy.  Anyway, I am looking for some help trying to evaluate the quality of the Sleep Science Celeste.  The specs for the Model are as follows (I have emailed them to get more info):

14 inch total thickness:

Top Layer = 2 inches of 5.3 lb Visco Foam with an ILD of 12-13.

Second Layer = 2 inch of Dunlop Latex (80 percent natural/ 20 percent synthetic)

Third Layer = 1 inch air barrier

Base = The 9 inch base is descirbed as being made of two layers of 1.8 lb. high density polyurethane.  The top layer has an ILD...
For all your Latex experts - some questions - zoltano

Hey everybody,

I am in the (very exciting) process of building my FIRST FOAM BED! I pretty much know what is out there, but some of my questions are still unanswered. In no particular order:

1. Is there such a thing as BLENDED DUNLOP CORE? I couldn' find one for the love of GOD!

2. Can a CHEAP, but good quality NATURAL DUNLOP core be found online? (The cheapest I've found is $500 shipped to Los Angeles for a XL Twin 6" 28 or 36IDL. Here is the link:  http://store.mattresses.net/mefoov.html)

3. How to cut latex? (FBM only sells king sizes online, and I definitely would split up the core...)

4. Which one is a more standard mattress height, 10", 11 OR 12 inch? (I assume that the most frequent height would translate into the biggest selection when shopping for compatible mattress covers...)

Yeah, I think you are right. Dunlop might be better for some, still they make less and less. Talalay is the new king.... It is probably marketing driven, just like the push to go "100% natural", albeit blended is a more supportive, longer lasting version. But "natural" is actually easier and cheaper to produce, and people can be easily talked into "going green"...

But I think I can help. You actually seem to have have two choices from the place what I've found.
