Re: HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT MATTRESS...no, I'm NOT trying to sell you anything - webfoot

I agree with Bruce on some of these points.   Technical data is useful, however most technical information on mattresses that is available is somewhat redundant because it is not technical enough.

Case in point:

You want to know how HARD or resilient a specific innerspring is to try and determine how supportive it is.  You might know the coil count and gauge of wire, you might even know the # of turns in each coil, the carbon content of the wire used, how its tempered, etc.  What none of these individual #'s tell you is the actual strength of the wire....its a guessing game even with all the specs you can think of.  If manufacturers wanted to make it easy...

Re: Any latex mattresses with closed/nearly-closed cell structure? - webfoot

You seem to be overlooking the fact these are completely differnt materials.  Visco Elastic foam is Polyurethane a man made product.  Mites my not be able to feed on it but that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't a friendly environment.  On the otherhand, Latex is rubber.  It may not be a friendly environment and cell sturcture has little to do with it.

I remember when Tempurpedic made similar claims of dust mite resistance.  While their foam is indeed dust mite resistant (dust mites can't feed on it as opposed to cotton fibers), the open cell structure accumulates 8x the number of dust mites compared to a spring air mattress.  My concern is that latex foam may be similar - the only factor that will truly inhibit dust mites from accumulating would be a more closed cell structure.  I believe (correct me if...
Re: Need some help finding latex dealers in Chicago land! - Phoenix
Jan 3, 2011 10:39 AM
I posted a smaller list in a previous thread but two of the outlets included there have gone out of business. Must be tough "mattress times" in Chicago. Here is a slightly larger list for Illinois but I will leave you to determine which of these may be close enough or have retail outlets that are close enough. They are not in any kind of "priority" order but there some very good values here.

Upcoming mattress surgery. Foam vendors near Philadelphia? - paul99se
Jan 27, 2011 4:39 PM
After seeing various "surgery" success stories, I am ready to cut the failing top from our 5yo Serta Perfect Sleeper "Coastal Oaks" and try some DIY replacement options.

My wife (5'8" 140# Back) and I (6'1" 230# Side/Back) liked this mattress until the top totally gave out in the last 6mo or so. This is a fairly firm innerspring with a 4.5" plush top (I know nothing of the actual construction), so I'm hoping that I'll find the coils in good condition and that I can layer some quality foam in place of the failed layer and get several more years of use from the remaining bits.

I'm not sure where to start as far as layers go. Neither of us is a big fan (in the showroom, at least) of the feel of MF, and when we try mattresses out, we tend to gravitate towards...

Prana Vinyasa (#4) Plush - City Mattress - BedSlug
Apr 26, 2011 4:24 AM
Alright.  I've been procrastinating for about three years and was on mattress overload after researching Latex, Box spring and NASA space age best stuff in the world foam beds.  Should I get this or that.  Well that guys says this and this woman said that.  It was giving me headaches reading all the endless possibilities and thinking, "will we be happy with the next bed?"

We pulled the trigger on a new Prana Vinyasa (4th Gen) Plush.  Purchased at City Mattress in Florida. I was torn as my wife preferred the firm, though admitted she didn't care what we had as long as she could sleep.  Last minute decision was the plush.  The reason.  I dont' care what she thinks.  I work and she doesn't.  Soo with that I got what I liked.  <----- Just Joking about the later.  It's true she doesn't work.  Anyhow, we have a...

I'm really sorry to hear about your tortured experience trying to purchase the right bed for you.  It illustrates an important and often overlooked item that should be on your shopping checklist: RETURN POLICY.

I hope this works out for you....

Re: is this true "100% Natural Talalay does not exist"???? - nikonthomas

This is an interesting thread. We recently purchased a memory foam mattress and HATE it. They may be good for some people but I think most might not like the way memory foam sleeps. Felt like everytime you rolled over, you rolled up a hill and very hot. Tempurpedic does such aggressive marketing, I'm not sure people really like what they end up with or understand the trade offs.

We shopped around and found a Verlo mattress that had a huge talalay latex foam section on top. The mattress, a Verlo grandeur elite, is an innerspring mattress, double sided with 3 inches on top and 3 inches on bottom. MUCH better sleeping mattress. Much cooler and we really liked that Verlo can adjust the mattress making it harder or softer over time. All in all, I'd look for a mattress like this one rather than a pure foam...

Let's talk pillows - tompa

Pillows seem to be overlooked. However, just as important as the right mattress.

Recently bought a Tempur Cloud w/1 Rhapsody pillow & 1 Cloud pillow.

The Rhapsody pillow ended up being too high for me as it kept my head at an upward angle & I was waking up with neck pain. The Cloud pillow was a lot better, but I don't think it's 100% right for me either plus it only comes in standard size. Too small as I have a king bed & it is annoying having to keep moving the pillow as I move.

The Tempur side pillow seems like it would be excellent for me (side sleeper), but it's too small. As of now, I think the only good option for my body is the Tempur neck pillow as it comes in king size.

I really would like...
