Re: Stearns & Foster ?'s - Good_Sleep

I belive the new line of stearns latex is now using a blended talay latex.  It used to be 100% synthetic.  All the latex samples I have ever received from different manufacturers (100% natural, 100% synthetic, blended, talaly, dunlop, talatech) have all dried out and crumbled over time.  And a pretty short period of time at that.  Hopefully it is different when wrapped in fabric and not exposed to the elements.

I've looked at the new stearns latex.  They are heavy, use a good amount of latex, and feel very solid.  They are a good brand, even if overpriced.

Jaxon Home in Culver City carries Savvy Rest mattresses.  Never been since they close usually around 6 and it is hard for me to make it before then, but I plan on checking it out.

Thanks for this info. I live near Culver City and never heard of this place but will check it out now.

Ortho Mattresses carries some 80-99% synthetic latex mattresses by Stearns And Foster. S&F makes different mattresses for different companies and these are only sold at Ortho. I think they're overpriced for synthetic latex but sometimes they are on sale. Also know that whatever the price posted on the mattress you can usually get it at about 40% off that. They work off commissions so walk out and try another salesman on another day. Sometimes a salesman is willing...

I think Stearns And Foster make decent mattresses, if over-priced. Their latex is synthetic, not natural and tends to dry out. You certainly would not want to use it in a sunny room.

If I were going to buy an S&F (and I have considered it) I would buy one that is NOT a Pillow Top, one that has their springs, not solid synthetic latex, and one that is firm. I would then soften it up by adding some 20-24ILD latex on the top of it. I think S&F's top of the line springs are pretty decent.  If you're going to go with 100% latex, go with Talalay or Dunlop, not S&F "smart latex" which is 100% synthetic.

As someone who bought, then returned a S&F pillowtop, I advise you to pass. I admit I don't know what  CaressFlex™  and "Smart Latex" are, or what's in the "SuperSoft Foam" but pillowtops are usually a poor choice and you could end up with an expensive, perfectly good mattress and box spring on a bed you can't sleep in due to the pillowtop foam breaking down and leaving you with a hammock/crater.

Hi --

Glad you've been lurking around here!

I am very interested in your review.  It's timely, because I think I may be buying a Room and Board mattress in the next day or so and want to see how you like yours, several months later.

As I've mentioned in many previous comments, my boyfriend and I have been through Mattress Buying Hell the last few months.

Briefly, we are about to exchange/return our new Stearns & Foster pillowtop King (from Sleep TrainWreck).  Reasons: We both feel like the pillowtop is really "mushy".

The mattress is very heavy and thick (hard to make the bed) -- we already had to lower it once with a mini-boxspring.

But the biggest complaint is that the mattress is too hot.  It's a Latex mattress.  I have never had this problem before...

The "S" brands? - SallySmiles

I'm up to my ears in research and found this site.

I keep seeing reference that is almost a warning to the 'S' brands = I know this means the big name brands and I have studied them and all others to a faretheewell.

We had a Simmons BeautyRest for many years, it is on it's second life at our son's house and he still loves it.   From the BeautyRest we went to a memory foam based on medical advice, even though it stunk like mad for a few weeks we slept pain free and it was great for two and half years before something happened and it started being really hot and making me sick. We pulled a Serta from the guest room and are making do,  we had immediate relief from whatever the memory foam was doing to us, it was astounding, but the...
