Flobed/latex questions -- please help - dreamsleep

Hi all,

As a result of this forum and your amazing input, I'm seriously considering moving to Latex and have zeroed in on Flobed, Savvy Rest, Royal-pedic, or OMI/Organicpedic. I have several outstanding questions I would greatly appreciate your help with:

FLOBEDS

-- Does anyone know why Flobeds' website reports their queen mattress is 1/2" shorter in length and width (59.5" x 79.5")? I might use it with an existing foundation and headboard, so want to make sure there is a flush fit.

-- Does anyone have the Flobeds oak foundation with drawers? Wondering if that can be used (1) with a headboard; and also (2) with a bedskirt.

-- What is their policy on reselling latex pieces that have been exchanged as part of their generous comfort policy? I'm squeamish about used mattresses even if protected by a cover. I recall reading a thread here about that somewhere, but can't seem to find...

I have a DIY memory foam mattress. All my foam was made in the USA by Foamex. Foamex is the largest Amercian domestic producer of foam.My memory foam comfort layer is Venus and Aerus. It was designed specifically not to sleep hot and according to Foamex it sets the standard for enviromentally safe foam production and it does not use the chemicals that cause the most out-gassing. I would imagine they would get sued by Tempur Pedic among others if not true.Standard spring mattresses out-gas some as well as every mattresses that has flame retardent chemicals. You need a doctors note to get those 100% chemical free organic mattresses that don't outgass. But don't drop a hot light bulb or cigarette on those! Poof, mattress up in flames.

Comfort layer
2" Venus 8lbs 15 ILD (equivalent of Tempur's 7 lbs HD foam)
4" Aerus 4 lbs 12 ILD

Base Foam

3" Reflex 1.8 lbs 28 ILD

Thanks.  The Green Sleep top would probably be too firm for my taste.  I would take better sleep over more organic if it came down to to it.

The Green Sleep I see comes with a foundation and not a box spring?  Is that true of all of their coil mattresses?  That seems like it might be a disadvantage?

Are the Green Sleep coils themselves reasonably body conforming or are they pretty stiff?

How would you compare the spring system on the Vi-spring vs. Royal-Pedic?...

Hello dallasmom,

Part of the reason I suggest this mattress is because I sell my own version of it in Canada.  So I am happy to recommend a good retailer that can provide people with what they need south of the border.  These mattresses are made in Ottawa by a small business that exclusively builds organic beds, if purity is what you want, it really does not get any better.  I have also found that comparing this mattress to a lot of other similar sounding wool or wool/cotton quilted mattresses in the price range that these guys just put a lot more wool in the mattress, they are thicker and more sumptuous that any other I have come across other than Royal-Pedic which is in a totally different price category.

Just thought I would give you another reply on this one....I think if you want to get a really good quality American made mattress and mostly filled with cotton batting.  You really ought to check out a brand called Royal-Pedic.

One of their reps actually made a visit to my store to see if we would carry their product.  I have to say if I didn't have spacing restrictions at the moment I was ready to floor atleast a couple of their beds.  And some day I may re-consider the possibility.  I had access to their american pricing sheets, I think they would work out to be much better priced than a Shifman and are truly made to a very similar standard of quality.  I know that they have been regarded by many to be the best mattress made in the US.  They also make organic...

Budgy and others, do you have thoughts on Shifman, basic level (e.g., the Shifman Chateau, which is a firm all-cotton innerspring with minimum padding)? I heard the original family sold the company several years ago and since then the quality has suffered, but haven't been able to verify. Am trying to decide between this and a horsehair innerspring.

i think they are probably going to be high 2000's or so to start.(that could be for the organic version though that would cost more)  but thats a far cry better than the over $5000 for the Shifman queen I found.

yeah actually I just found a place that sells it.  http://organicsleepproducts.com/rp-all-cotton-mattress-set.html

Budgy, the Shifmans are significantly marked up on the Bloomie's web site - they typically sell at 40-60% of 'retail,' so the one you are referring to, which I think is the Chateau I asked you about, can be gotten for around $3,000. In light of that, do you still think the Royal-pedic prevails -- i.e., assuming the price were comparable, which bed is better in terms of quality, durability, performance, etc.? Also, for those interested in Royal-pedic, Royal-pedic sells direct and what I like about them is that they are straight...

Here are (quite) a few manufacurers and outlets in the "general" LA area. Some of these have very good value ... at least the equivalent of what you could purchase online ... and some of these would make great testing grounds so you would better know what to buy online. Some of the manufacturers on this list may be too far away to visit in person or only manufacture for retail outlets and some may not make all latex mattresses (website is not specific) but I've included them as they may be worth a call to see if what they make is available close to you.

Los Angeles probably has more choice in latex than any other city so I hope this is not "overkill". It's not even a complete list but I've added a few comments to each.

There are so many here that at...
