Thickness and density of mattress pad for back pain?

When waking up, I have slight back pain that originally stems from a minor spinal injury about four months ago. My current bed is firm and only about two years old, so I am thinking that a topper would work well. I mostly sleep on my back, but occassionally on my side. I am 5'10 and weigh 140 pounds.

What thickness and density would be best? I was thinking of a 3 inch sensus 5 pound topper. Then I read that three inches is too thick and can cause more back pain. Is that accurate?

Another thing that I am worried about is that in the summer it can get to over 100 degrees. What can I do to keep it cool?

Hard to give advice because this is a very personal thing. A two inch layer would not be too thick. It is hard to sleep cool over memory foam without putting insulation over it, but putting insulation over memory foam changes its feel.
