So, I'm back again with the latest chapter of the New Mattress Saga (see previous posts for back story). Just purchased a cooling mattress pad -- the one with "Outlast Technology" (Lord only knows what that is). The pad arrived and when we took it out of the box, it had an extremely strong, chemical odor. So we decided to wash it before trying it on the bed. The instructions say it's ok to launder it and put it in the dryer (on low heat), though air drying is preferred. Off my boyfriend went to the laundromat. When I arrived home later, The Boyfriend had a sheepish look on his face. Turns out, the mattress pad disintegrated in the dryer! The entire bottom side of it was completely torn up, with sticky, white fluff everywhere. He said he dried it for a short period of time, on LOW. I contacted the retailer, and they told me the pad should be ok in the dryer, but air drying is preferred. So they are sending me a replacement. Now what? Another stinky mattress pad is en route...will that be a problem again? And we don't even know yet if the cooling mattress even works!! The cooling pad is needed to correct the overly warm, overly expensive Stearns and Foster pillowtop that we are still evaluating. Anyone else had the same problem(s) with this type of pad? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I don't have experience with this mattress pad, but I do have experience with laundry mat dryers. They get very HOT, even on low. And in our town, the temp selectors really don't do anything. They are older machines and pretty much have one temp - really hot. Wash the new one and then take it home and drape it over some dining chairs - like a pretend tent or fort that kids make to play in. You could put a fan under to speed things up. Good luck! |
Please let us know how this pad works when you get the new one. I'm sure we'd like to know if it really works. My mattress toppers have that same kind of flimsy sort of fabric on the back that looks as though it could be easily destroyed so I'm very hesitant to wash and dry them. Is a front-loading washer recommended? |
For those who have asked...the new, replacement Cooling Mattress Cover (with Outlast) has been on the bed for a couple of nights and the jury is still out. Luckily, this one arrived without the stinky, chemical smell. So it didn't require laundering. It's hard to say if it's really "cooling" or not. Sometimes, it feels cooler than previous pads. Other times, it feels about the same. In fact, the package insert says that the pad won't always feel cool -- huh? I thought that was the whole point! The pad itself is quite thick and fluffy. Since we already have a pillowtop (at least for now), it's overkill; like putting a big, poufy pad on top of another big, poufy pad. We just sink in and disappear...it's too much. But we are probably going to get rid of the pillowtop. I also wonder if the cooling chemicals/ingredient in the pad are safe. Does anyone know? If I decide the pad is helping to keep things cool, I'll put up with it. But I just don't know if it's working. If you have one of these, please weigh in! Thanks.

Sorry you're sinking into a poufy cloud of fluffiness.:( If you read reviews on this topper, many people say it does help and others say it does nothing at all. It might be something I would consider for next summer! |
I still highly recommend you get a St. Dormeir protector..it will likely cool you better than the Outlast technology will and it is not made of chemicals. http://snuggledown.com/s/catalog/st_geneve/st_dormeir_wool_mattress_protectors/ Check out the reviews on the page...it is a little pricey...but it works. |
