best matress for chronic pain situation

I got a nerve injury from a Yoga class that developed into chronic pain and finding the right mattress is a nightmare now. I have been lucky to have twice found mattresses that worked over the last 10 years but each of them compressed after three years. One was a very inexpensive Simmons beautyrest that I found in my parent's home after they died and another was also a Simmons -- slightly more expensive. The price doesn't seem to really matter. I have been reading the posts for quite a while now and trying out organic latex beds, but part of the problem I am running up against is that I need a smooth soft surface with a firm base for my back and most of the mattresses seem to have all kinds of stitching on them. Part of my chronic pain situation is a hypersensitivity so the stitching causes pain. It does seem to be very idiosyncratic because the two mattresses that worked for me did have some stitching but somehow it didn't bother me because of the material or the way it was laid out. The pillow top mattresses don't work for me because they press against the nerve and some of the latex mattresses also do that. But, in any case, I was wondering what people think about the new Simmons latex mattresses and also about the royalpedic mattress. And if anyone has any other suggestions I would deeply deeply appreciate it.

Thank you.

Betsy,

I can't help you with the mattresses, but, have you considered an "exposed" wool pad as a possible solution for your hypersensitivity issue?

Thank you for the response. Can you tell me what you mean by an "exposed" wool pad?

Philip, do you own one of these? The reviews at amazon, though largely good, indicated that sometimes they smell like a barn and one guy said his "bunched up" causing it to be uncomfortable.

As to the OP, I would say try a very soft latex and/or 5-6 lb. density memory foam over firmer latex.

Yes Jim, I do own one.  I recommended it to Betsy because it works so well for us.  As you said, the amazon reviews ARE GOOD, and it doesn't smell like any barn that I have been in.  Perhaps that reviewer had other problems.  As to the bunching up thing, we have been using a kingsize one for over two years without any such problems.  Wool has traditionally been used to alleviate bed sores for people bedridden or otherwise incapacitated.  It should, in fact, help Betsy with her sensitivity issues.

I see that you are now enjoying that dunlop layer.

Thank you so much for the information Phillip. I will try that.

Does anyone know about the royalpedic matress and also about the Natura matress called Nightcare or any other natura mattress? The nightcare is natural talaway latex plus jacket springs.

Have you looked at any mattresses with an adjustable base under it?  Find a store that has mattresses with adjustable bases under them.  I have a tempurpedic with the adjustable base under it.  It's awesome at relieving pressure in my lower back, neck and shoulders.  I have a hard time sleeping on any mattress flat.

If you are looking at latex mattresses, they work well on adjustable bases.  Not nearly as good as my tempurpedic (my opinion).  I've had both.  I'll never sleep flat again, unless I leave home.
