My recent search for a latex mattress ultimately brought me to Custom Sleep Design in Shelton, CT. I’ve previously posted a more detailed thread on this search over at http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/forum/latex-foam-search/18334-0-1.html. Since many people have wondered about CSD, I wanted to put up a quick summary of my dealings with them, all in one place.

As a know-nuthin’ novice googling around the net, I encountered CSD, which is actually located in my home town. I initially dismissed them due to a less-than-spectacular website. The site also contained no pricing info and this was a BIG TURNOFF for me. I seemingly got a lot more information from the Sleepy’s site, so I headed down to the one in my town.

After several run-ins with Sleezy’s salesmen, I discovered this forum, which was a godsend. A few of the postings here led me right back to CSD. I would encourage everyone to at least consider Custom Sleep Design for their latex mattress. The owner, Bob, was great to deal with. Their pricing is competitive. Zoning is incorporated into their design. They have a 90 day trial period for any necessary adjustments to your bed. Very friendly and professional.

However, there are areas in which they could improve. In addition to the lame website, I was not thrilled with the 3 to 4 week wait for delivery and was especially not happy when that wait extended into the sixth week. Also, getting CSD to pick up the phone more often would be a plus : - )

In the final analysis, dealing with them was a positive experience. If they can straighten out the aforementioned shortcomings, all the more better.

Generally speaking, my journey to buying a better mattress has been filled with learning experiences. To summarize some of the more important things that this rookie has learned on his trip:

  • Search for information online – places like this forum, where you learn from the trials and tribulations of others are tremendously invaluable.
  • The Big Chain is not necessarily better than the Little Guy. People go to Sleepy’s for the same reason they go to Dunkin Donuts………it’s convenient
  • Mattresses categorized as being latex (Dr Breus) can actually contain less than 50% latex.
  • Sleezy’s is a master at the art of deception. I dealt with 4 of their salesman and each one had only a casual acquaintance with the truth. Is it a coincidence that all of their salesman must undergo a 4-week training course at Sleezy’s University? Do a wiki search on this place and you’ll find settled lawsuits centered about alleged deceptive practices.
  • Someone posted here that they were offered $75 to NOT post a negative review on one of Sleezy’s mattresses at the Sleezy's site. Does the word ‘bribe’ come to mind?

OK, I said this would be a quick summary and here I am, rambling away…….. good luck in your search and I hope my experiences might help just a bit.
