Latex Mattress journey continues....
An update from my previous post, for those who are interested (http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/forum/back-pain-new-mattress-sf-hearthstone-luxury-firm/9302-0-1.html) The cushion firm latex mattress I bought (6" Plush firm natural Dunlop latex core, .75" plush firm latex on either side) turned out to have a defective core. The center was "spongy" and didn't have nearly the cushion firm feel of the edges OR the floor model. Luckily I had a fantastic saleswoman who allowed me to switch out my defective one with a floor model of the firmer version (6" firm natural Dunlop core, .75" plus firm on either side) at no charge, saved me the restocking fee that switching models would have cost. Returning the defective one and picking up the firmer version on Thursday, I'll update again after I spend some nights on it. Just thought I'd let people know there ARE defective latex cores out there and to make sure you get yours from a reputable dealer who will work with you to get it right. Re: Latex Mattress journey continues.... (Update)
Quick update: The new firmer version doesn't sag! That in and of itself is a small victory. It is VERY firm however, being both Dunlop and having the firmest core in the store. The .75 inches of Plush Firm on either side can be felt but its not much. So now I'm looking at Talalay toppers to slap on top and am trying to decide on an ILD, leaning towards 28-32. I'm 5'11, 215lbs, and a stomach sleeper so I really like a firm mattress that will support my hips and keep my back from bowing at all, but also just want a little softness. I tried a Natural Plus Wool topper at the store and while it was nice, it just felt like I was sleeping on top of a blanket and wasn't thrilled with the feel. The Natura Classic Talalay topper felt great but it was $350 (+tax) for 2 inches with an unknown ILD so hoping to get a cheaper Natural Talalay one online somewhere. Also, does anyone think I'd be better off with a 3" instead of 2" topper? I'm leaning towards no since I like to feel the support of the bottom one, but I'm open to all opinions. Thanks for all your kind thoughts! |
Re: Latex Mattress journey continues....
Sleeper: Based on the information you have given us, I would say you want no more than 2 inches of soft Talalay for a topper. I would also think something in the 24 to 28 ILD range might possibly work the best for you. I am basing this estimation on the convoluted 2 inch piece of soft Talalay that came on my FloBeds. Really someone with more knowledge of purchasing toppers could possibly give you more detailed information. Good luck with your perfect mattress quest. |
Re: Latex Mattress journey continues....
Thanks for the reply eagle, that fits in line with what I think would work as well. What ILD is that convoluted topper from Flobeds? Doesn't look like they sell them individually on their site, though from what I've read around here they're very helpful so I may just give them a ring and see if I can get one. I'm leery of places that won't let me return it at all (i.e. Rocky Mountain Mattress) so that's another feather in Flobeds cap, if they will. Initially I had thought FBM was going to work but given the wildly varying products that people seem to be getting I decided I'd look elsewhere. Thanks again! |
