Lux-HQ or HD36-HQ Topper?

Hello all!

A mattress-loving newb posting for the first time.  My wife and I recently purchased a Sleep Number Special Edition Bed.  A decent enough price (<$1000), but I wanted a bit more cushiness.  A couple of weeks ago, I purchased an Isoform 3" memory foam topper and placed it inside the bed, just below the pillowtop.  While it has increase the "plushness" of the bed there's quite a bit of sinking and maybe a little too much cushiness.  :)

While increasing the firmness of the air bladders is one solution, it's worth noting that "support" layer of foam above the air bladders is anything BUT supportive - it's a pretty flimsy 1" layer of foam.  No idea what the density is, but I figured that adding a firmer layer of support between the memory foam layer and the air bladders may provide a little more support.  I found FBM's products online last night (and while doing a search on them, came across this great forum), and wondered if anyone had any experience with these toppers?  The Lux sounds great but it may be going too far in terms of what I'm looking for, which is just a bit of added support to the memory foam layer.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide!

At that thickness (1") I would recommend the Lux-HQ to achieve what you are going for.  I happen to have some 1" thick layers of HD-36 and they don't feel that firm when used alone.  I would also speculate that you might not even be able to perceive the difference between 50 ILD (Lux) and 36 ILD (HD36) at just 1" thick beneath 3" of MF.

Why don't you ditch the 1" layer and simply use your 3" MF... is there something preventing that from being feasible?

Good Luck!

LatencyMachine - thanks for the feedback.  Now that I think about it, I will give it a try without the topper.  However, I also ordered a 2 1/2" LUX topper to see how that feels as well.  Thanks again!

I just browsed your post again and realized that you are using 3" of MF underneath a pillowtop.  That's a lot of cush in my opinion.  For what's it worth, I too bought a 3" memory foam topper a while back, and that ultimately led me to this forum because it wasn't quite right.  So I guess I'm saying "been there, done that".  The bottom line for me (5'10"/165#) and me wife (5'8"/125#) is that 3" of 4# MF was simply too cushy.

Good luck with the Lux you ordered.  However, don't make yourself crazy trying to 'fix' that 3" of MF if ultimately it is the problem.  Yeah it sucks to spend a few hundred on a topper and then conclude that you don't like it.  But hey, don't lose sleep over it, literally .  Sell it to someone locally and try again!  Maybe try a 1" MF layer instead.  See how you like it.  You can always add another inch, but you can't take an inch away from a thicker one!  And of course there's always talalay latex.  I have a 1" 20 ILD Talalay latex top layer on my bed and really like it.

LatencyMachine - I took your advice and removed the 1 inch topper, and wouldn't you know it?  It's helped firm up the bed.  My wife immediately noticed the difference.  Seeing how a flimsy PU layer could cause the initial over-cushiness, i'm still curious to see what adding the 2 1/2" layer of LUX will provide in terms of possible additional support.  Thanks again for the tip!
