Natural talalay topper thoughts...

I am looking for opinions because I have never purchased any latex bedding before. (I have read through many of the forum posts and many of you have experiance with latex bedding and are so knowledgeable) I have decided that I want to purchase a natural Talalay latex topper but am unsure as to the firmness and the thickness we need. We will be putting it over our Original Mattress Factory pillow top mattress that is about 4 years old and the pillowtop has lost it's comfort. I originally thought my back problems stemmed from my pregnancy with my 9lb. 13oz. baby. But, it has been a year and a half and I am still having some lower back soreness when I get up in the mornings. Also, my husband has an auto immune disorder which causes sore and achy joints. Obviously, I understand that a mattress topper won't fix his joint problems, I am just looking to make him as comfortable as he can be. The problem is that I am 5'8" and 115 lbs and my husband is 5'11" and 190lbs and I think that if we go with a medium firmness that it won't be soft or comfortable enough for me. But I fear that if we go with the soft version that it won't provide enough support for him or he may feel that he "sinks through it". I am mostly a back sleeper, occasionally I sleep on my side. My husband is mostly a side sleeper and sometimes a back sleeper. We are considering purchasing it in 2" or 3" but being our bed is already a pillow top I am thinking we may not need the 3". Also, if anyone knows where I would be able to see these toppers in person, in Northeast Ohio, that would be great! As of now I am planning on purchasing online, sight unseen (kinda scary for me considering the investment)

Thanks for any thoughts!

I'm still a newbie at this so take my opinions with a grain of salt ;)

From all my reading and some personal experience, I can say that if your padding/pillowtop is wearing out that whatever topper you get might not help too much. It's possible you could buy yourself some time, but sooner or later you will either need to get a different mattress or do what my husband and I did -- which is cut off the quilted top and remove the foam inside and replace with something else. We are waiting for our latex to arrive from foam by mail so we left some of the stuff still inside. It's not difficult to do at all -- first cut with box cutter then we just used kitchen shears to cut the top part all the way around. Really the difficult part was the feeling that, "Oh my gosh -- this mattress was so expensive, I can't believe we are doing this!!!"

As far as thickness of the toppers and firmness (ILD's), I'd rather not hazard a guess about those.

Good luck!

Agree with stacytr. Putting something on top of a sagging, indented pillowtop is not going to remedy the situation. Better to cut off the pillowtop first  then start playing with toppers. Much less expensive then buying a new mattress after only 4 years!

Is the pillowtop part of the mattress compressed evenly, or does it have craters? If craters, I'm guessing you'll need to detach it from the mattress and go from there. I'd think the springs should still be fine on an OMF bed (going by what I've read about them; no firsthand experience).

Can you go to an OMF store and lie on the latex beds they have there? That'll give you an idea of what the stuff feels like, as a starting point. Also, because OMF makes their own mattresses, they might be able to just cut you a topper. Or two half-size toppers, if you and your husband need different ILDs.
