Need help finding an equivalent mattress...

I bought a Simmons Beautyrest Clifton Plush mattress (full size, M12617.20.7064) many years ago while I was in school, and need help navigating through the mannufacturers' maze of mattress names to find something like it in a Cal King size. I've since gotten married -- my wife and I have been through at least a mattress a year looking for something just like it, but I end up sleeping on it every now and then still, just for comfort. :( Any ideas on where to go for help? (Simmons hasn't been very helpful) I'm almost to the point where money is no object -- I've got to find one!

I have a very similar problem with my old Sealy Posturepedic Firm.

Have been looking for 4 years for an equivalent, been through three mattresses.  It's about 15 years old and is just too small.  All the new mattresses seem to create "normal body impressions" within months that hurt my back, while the old tried and true design has been utterly abandoned by the big manufacturers.

They all feel great for a year, and then I have to drop another $2000 for more pain.

You will not find anything exactly like what you had years ago because all the mattress companies change their materials and springs every year or three and they just don't make them the same anymore.

Sealy is now using a titanium spring which is going to feel different than steel. They also are now using pocket coils in their latest midrange and higher end Posturepedics.

As to the Simmons problem I would recommend this:

Call the mattress store you last bought from and ask them for the number of their Simmons representative. If they won't give it to you call around to other stores. Someone will eventually give it to you, I think.

Once you have it be very nice and ask very nicely if he can help you figure it out. Have the info on your tag ready to give him so he can help you figure it out. You can cut off the tag because your warranty is no longer valid and it does not matter any more. The tag should help the Rep identify the mattress though he may not be able to. If you can at least find out what the gauge of steel was in that early version of your Simmons it will help tell you what you need. Since Simmons uses a 13 gauge and 15 gauge coil now, you may be able to match the feel based on that, which one matches best the coil you have. If it is a 14 gauge then you may want to switch to Stearns and Foster as they use a 14 gauge pocket coil if I am not mistaken. (Don't mention S&F to Simmons, they are fierce competitors!)

But honestly it is going to be difficult to pin down the exact model you want based on specs. Your best bet is to find a GOOD salesman in a mattress store (hard to do but they do exist; ask Budgy ;-D ) and he may be able to help you pin down which Simmons or S&F will most match your old mattress. The bottom line is that you probably need to spend some time shopping and trying various feels. Try to find a store that has the best return/exchange policy. Many are now charging sizable "comfort exchange" fees plus re-delivery for exchanges.
