I have an 8 year old King S&F Kingsbury. This mattress weighs a ton. It took 3 people to get it into our room. S&F suggests you rotate, which we have done. However, we have noticed that it is not as comfortable. Not a big sag on the sides, but a noticeable improvement when you lie in the middle. I inspected the box springs. The fabric sags, the metal wire is the only thing supporting. I stuck a few 4" wide by 3' long 1' thick slats of wood under the area with less suport. It seems to impove the sag considerably. However, does not have the more comfortable feel of the middle. I suffered a severe ruptured disc 6 months ago in my lower back and am healing, but don't want to spend alot of time with trial and error. Questions: 1) My Bed: a) Is my bed shot, padding shot, springs shot? b) Are our box springs (2 twins) shot c) Or, Should I inserts over the area of Box Springs with 1/4" plywood and then buy a latex sleeper Pad for on top of the bed? I am not too keen on cutting open the bed if the bed is a lost cause. 2) I have never tried latex and have been having a tough time time finding a retail store that carries a bed similar to what most are purchasing, i.e.EZSleep 100% latex. Can someone tell me which major brand that is solid core latex similar to EZsleep & FBM or is this wave of latex on latex an interenet phenomenom? Also people with lower back issues tend to do better with the latex bed do to its firmness? 3) I noticed several internet sites offering mattesses with dirt on corners etc... from shipping. Most are the "S" brand and can be had for 10-20% of Full Retail. The "Caveat" is that they are void of warranty and you cannot return. Does anyone have experience going this direction? Most likely the PU foam or other padding material has compressed over time where you lie on it. That's why the middle of the mattress still feels firm and supportive. Your springs are probably in good shape under that foam--as is usually the case. That's why mattress surgery is becoming so popular. Replace the foam retain the mattess. And if you are seriously considering buying a new mattress you really have nothing to lose by cutting the top open and replacing the foam. None of the S-brands make mattresses similar to the mattress kits sold by SleepEZ and Flobeds. What they offer are latex cores topped with low density PU foam. Buy one and you will have the same compression problem you have now long before the latex core underneath is shot. You mention that you have ruptured discs in your lower back and that is a huge red flag with latex. You may not be able to sleep on it. This isn't always the case but it's something you should be aware of if you're going to persue latex. And if you do, I would recommend Dunlop over Talalay. In any case you really want to buy with the option of returning it for a full refund if it proves to be incompatible with your back problem. Lastly, dirty mattresses, no warranty and no returns-- no sale! |
If many people on this forum are also having back issues why are so many leaning toward latex? Am I missing something? If not latex and regular coil S types are poor quality then what? A Shifman, Royal Pedic, Kluft, Airloom or other $3500+ mattress? Let's take for example a Sealy Springfree Beachside which I have been reading so much about over the internets other mattress blog. Firm enough to support my back so I have read. If talalay latex on the top layer is not the answer as you suggest with a "healing" back, why not a latex core with a poly top? Now that I know I will only get 6-8 years out of a mattress, I am ok with that as long as it is comfortable during that time. Getting a mattress with a voided warranty. For me the Jury is still out, but if I can get a latex set at 1/4 as that of Macy's, as long as I try it in the store and have ruled out others in the line....I might just go for it. Might.....I say. Also, even if the mattress I purchase has been a return, I have no problem sleeping on a mattress someone else has had. I do it everytime I check into a W or Westin...which seems like every other week these days. |
I have 5 herniated disks from a car accident and my FloBeds Latex mattress feels good to me but that is because I made it very firm (1" topper over two 37 ILD E-Firm latex cores over a 46 ILD Super Firm latex core on my favorite side of the bed). When it was softer, my back hurt and when it was too firm (tried sleeping with the Super Firm under the 1" topper) my shoulders hurt. Everyone is different. I also sleep on a latex pillow and it took me several Overstock Latex pillow purchases to get two to be the right height for me. The others I am using as spare pillows and pillows for shams. |
