Q about foam to the edge
Our previous mattress was an innerspring with firm foam in the edges for support. This support was nice when sitting on the edge of the bed, and seemed to increase the effective surface area of the mattress, as you could sleep near the edge without the edge collapsing. Now, I have a latex foam mattress I've put together myself with layers inside a futon cover. The edges are soft, so sitting on the edges feels different, and my husband says when he sleeps near the edge he feels like he might roll off (he rolls around a lot at night). Would getting a "real" mattress cover, tailored to be the right number of inches, keep the edges from feeling as soft? And where would be a good source to get one? It would need to be 10". |
Re: Q about foam to the edge
In my experience no. I slept on a Dunlop latex mattress for many years. The foam was enclosed in a conventional mattress cover. The edge was soft when you sat on it. More recently I had (briefly) a Talalay latex mattress from SleepEZ. The foam was enclosed in a zippered mattress cover that looked like a conventional cover when closed. The edge was just as soft when I sat on it. I have to say though, this never bothered me and I never felt like I was about to roll off when I slept on the edge of the mattress. I would recommend keeping your latex inside some kind of mattress cover. Latex is fragile and the cover protect it from damage. It also shields it from UV light which can degrade latex and limit its longevity. Foamorder.com will construct a zippered mattress cover to any size. I was told that SleepEZ will also sell the mattress cover and they might be less expensive too. |
