Hello - Reading these posts has been very instructive, so thanks to everyone for that. I bought the foambymail 6 inch firm latex mattress with the 2 inch soft topper (Queen size). I am 5'9", 195 lbs. When I first laid on it, I was surprised by how much the latex seemed to push on my back and completely fill in the area under my spine. I thought, wow, this is really supportive and should be great. After 10 minutes or so, there was a low-level ache in my lower back. After 30 minutes it became so noticeable that I couldn't really remain in that position. I find it quite comfortable on my side or stomach, but every time I lay on my back I get the achy back. I've slept on it for 5 nights and it hasn't changed. Does anyone think this will go away with use or is this the problem many have mentioned where some people just can't sleep on latex? Thanks! ChrisL |
Either latex is not providing the correct level of support for your body or... As you've noticed, latex really pushes against your body and fills out those gaps along your spine you get with an ordinary mattress. It could be aggravating an existing condition such as a herniated disc, sciatica or bursitis--something you might not even have been aware of until your new mattress started pressing against it. I don't think this is going to go away. |
If the old boxspring has acutal springs (not just a wood or metal frame), might try experimenting with a surface panel for more pushback in some areas and less in others. For testing purposes the flat panel that covers the spare tire in some car trunks might work (if it can be easily removed), a flattened cardboard box or corrugated plastic real estate or campaign type sign, or even a carpet remnant or foot mat. |
Yeah, I tried it with a backboard and I tried it with the soft foam on the bottom and none of it is really working out. Dang. This is going to be a bear to try and pack up again to return. Is there anyone in the Minneapolis area that wants to try this mattress for a couple hundred cheaper than list price? |
Chris - that's too bad - your situation. I do hope you get it worked out. If not, you can probably sell that 6" firm queen sized piece on Craigslist for pretty close to what you paid for it if you can be patient and wait for the buyer. Even if it was $400, that would be a great deal for someone. Emphasize that it is new and just a little too firm for you but if they like latex, it should be great for them. Keep the topper as you could use it on whatever you end up with. I was thinking that one other thing you might try as a test, is to fold in half the topper and put that on just your side of the bed on top of the 6" core and see if that provides any relief. If it does, then you could always add another layer on the bed. If not then its probably just not for you. |
