Feedback on my Sleep EZ latex mattress configuration?

After much online comparison shopping, I think I've decided to go with a Sleep EZ 13,000 latex mattress. I need an all-latex sleep surface for allergy reasons, and I want something that will last for a long time. I'm primarily a side sleeper, female, about 5'5" and 180 lbs., with no particular injury or pain issues, and I like a mattress that feels fairly plush on top but has firm enough underlying support. I sleep alone, on a queen size bed.  I haven't gotten to try out any latex mattresses in person, except for my mother's 30+-year-old Dunlop mattress (which, incidentally, is still going strong, and which I like). I want to minimize the chances of having to do any layer exchanges, so I tried to come up with the most flexible configuration possible. I'm not even sure of whether I'll prefer the feel of Dunlop or Talalay, so this is what I'm thinking:

Top to bottom (split layers, configured the same on both sides):
1.4" blended Talalay soft
1.4" blended Talalay soft
2.8" Dunlop soft
2.8" Dunlop medium
2.8" Dunlop firm

This way, I can put either the Talalay soft or the Dunlop soft on top, depending on which feel I like better. If I like the Talalay soft but 2.8" of it is too much, I can move one of the 1.4" layers down in the mix, leaving only 1.4" of Talalay soft on top. If there's anything unsatisfactory about the soft/soft/medium/firm configuration as a whole, I can play with the split layers before doing an exchange to figure out what will work better. I'd be surprised, though, if I couldn't come up with some arrangement of these layers that would work for me. Sean at Sleep EZ says that it very rare for anyone who orders the 13,000 to require exchanges, and he thinks this configuration will be good. I'd love to have some feedback from those of you with latex experience, though. This is a big purchase, and I'm pretty much flying blind. I do have lots of latex samples on the way to me in the mail, but I'm not sure how helpful that will really be.

I have an inch of 20 ILD talalay on top of 3" of HR foam on top of a Sealy mattress. With the soft talalay, I go to sleep very comfortably but wake up with aching shoulders and neck. I've alleviated this somewhat changing pillows (about 10 different ones) reducing their loft so my head is not too high, but it seems with the soft latex my shoulders sink and I have the resulting pain. Last night I put the latex under the HR foam and it seemed to work better for me. Just one person's experience!

Thanks for the reply. It's interesting that only one inch of soft latex would have that effect for you. Sleep EZ says that their soft is 22-24 ILD, so it would be just a touch firmer than yours. Their medium is 30-32 ILD, which would probably be too firm for me as a top layer. I guess I'll just have to try the soft and see how it goes. Also, the Sleep EZ quilted cotton/wool mattress cover may slightly mitigate the sinking in effect. What did you have between you and your latex topper? Was it in some sort of cover?

Hi Eudaemon,

Let us know how it works out for you.

I just had a miserable night of sleep and am willing to "fly blind" myself ... but I live in Canada so then there is exchange and duty as well ...

I haven't ordered yet, but will probably be doing so within the next couple of weeks. I found out there's a local store that carries Savvy Rest mattresses, so I want to go there and try them out to see how I like the feel of Talalay/Dunlop and various firmnesses before I take the latex plunge. I obviously can't test out the Sleep EZ offerings in person, being nowhere near Arizona, but this should give me some idea. Sleep EZ did send me very generously sized samples of Dunlop firm, medium, and soft and Talalay firm, medium, and soft. I actually put them into a pillowcase and used them as a pillow for a few nights to make sure that I didn't have any kind of negative reaction to the latex. All was fine. Anyway, I'll definitely give you guys an update as soon as I'm sleeping on my new mattress. It's the least I can do, after all I've learned here.

I'm sorry you're in such discomfort right now. I hope you find a good option soon. It is a greater risk for you to order from the US, with the extra charges and all. Isn't there a latex mattress company based in Canada? Sleeptek, I think?

The price difference is so huge that it is worth the risk ... that is why I am moving slowly on this one. Thanks for the thoughts.

Foam by Mail and Foam Distributing have such great prices even with our dollar dropping against the Green Back, and additional taxes I think I would save possibly $1,300.

Foamite is a distributor of foam in the Toronto area, and they have a warehouse showroom where you can sit and sleep on mattresses and find the right blend of ILD ratings and quality of foam. I think with this I would be confident to order something from a US company.
