Some quick pics of our first latex mattress from Foam by mail (fbm). Thanks to all for the great information here. I wanted to post some pics as reference for anyone else looking for the cheap option. Both wife and I can sleep on pretty much anything, so not much useful info for people with back problems. 6" queen firm 2" queen medium Shipping was quick and the holes in the topper are pretty consistent. Not nearly as bad as some pics I saw. The pictures are white balance corrected with a Whibal gray card, so the color is close to real life (as long as your monitor colors aren't way off). Comfort-wise, we both love it. But then again, we've never slept on latex and aren't picky.

Your mattress from FBM looks really good. And you got such a great deal. $645 for a queen sized 100% latex mattress! I have a very similar mattress from FBM and have been very satisfied with it. It looks like you bought the 6" core without going for the upgrade of the fully zipped terry cloth cover for $20 which would have enclosed both pieces of latex. Be sure you cover the topper up good with a mattress pad as it is fairly fragile and could be prone to rips and tears if its too exposed. Not that little rips or tears would really degrade the performance of the latex as far as sleeping on it, but it could end up shortening its useful life.
I could be wrong but I do think your bed frame could be an issue if you don't put something between the frame and the mattress. If it looks like the one in the picture, over time it could cut into the latex. You could put a tough piece of canvas (or two), or even something like a thin piece of pegboard under it to prevent this, but I don't think the bed in the link is a good solution for a fragile latex mattress. hmattress is that core 6" piece sown shut ??? I really want to see the quality of the core. FBM has good prices, with some mixed reviews. If the topper/core has any identification markings along the sides could you please take a photo(s) of that too ? Edit: Is the core a full 6" or is it 5.5" ?? That's exactly the frame I have. I think with the terry cloth cover, that could be an issue. The cheap cover I have is thick (yes it's zipped, will get some pics uncovered when i get a chance). I don't think frame cutting into the latex will be an issue. Even when sitting in one spot, it barely makes a bulge. The weight is surprisingly well distributed. For heavier sleepers or jumping on the bed, I can see how the wires can flex and bend. |

I got a very similar setup recently. It's also from foambymail (FBM), and on a similar bed frame. Shipping by FBM was fairly quick, order to delivery took only 9 days. 6" queen medium in a terry cloth 1" medium topper 1" soft topper. (To me, the 1" medium feels no different from the 1" soft. If it wasn't for the labeling on the edge, I wouldn't know which is which.) If I can order again, I will go with the 6" firm. While the medium was supportive enough, but I'm used to sleeping on really firm, so firm will probably work better for me. (I'm 5'7", 150) But overall, I'm satisfied with the setup (it's only been 2 nights.) Image of my bed frame with the wood slats. I'm using them to protect the latex from the gaps on the bedframe. (Even though the bed frame advertises 14" elevation, but with the hinges on the bottom, storage bin's height can at most be ~12".) here's the 6" after I removed the terry cloth cover. there's a lot of uneven holes and patches all over. Another close up of the 6" Here's a picture of the uneven holes on 1" soft. Overall, the 1" toppers look better in general than the 6" mattress. Despite the uneven holes and patches, the latex mattress performs like it's supposed. |
