Friends

I'm glad to have found this forum, fantastic!cheeky

I am looking to invest in a good long-term bed for me and my wife. Off late we have run into sevral issues. Here's my short story and I look forward to a good recommendation.

Me is 37 years, 6'3" tall, 185 lbs, side sleeper (mostly, but lie on back too). She is 33 years, 5'11" tall, 200lbs, tummy sleeper (sleeps on side and back too).

We have this (serta, crappy? - SEE BELOW FOR SPEC) bed that I had paid $1300 5 years back. Now it seems like there a constant curve/crater on both sides at our butt region. I am assuming this is causing back pain to both of us.

while my wife complains of backache, once is a while, I have serious issues.

I have had a L5-S1 diskectomy  in 2003 and now have a reherniated disc! I woke up with it one day! Just got back from the horspital after 6 days and the doctors are trying to get a fusion done which I have been avoiding.

I have this severe pain in my foot all night and am on meds.

I am thinking of getting a goot bed with a good base that's electronically adjustable to raise head, shoulders, foot etc which is independent on both sides. This way if I wake up at night and raise the foot area to 60 deg, my wife should fall off the bed in her sleep :)

I am "guessing" I need a x-firm mattress?

Could some of you pro's who've lived with gooood mattresses, please share your experiences?

I went to a healthy back store and lied on a few tempurpedic beds for 5 mins each. Honestly, they all felt the same except couple of them and lying down for 5 minsdidn't tell me the difference.

Thanks a ton!

Dodz.

PS: Feel free to laugh. the Serta bed I have has the following Spec (Just managed to google, it -Serta Perfect Sleeper, romantic Isle).  -

  • Serta Romantic Isle Euro Top
  • Experience the Serta-Perfect Sleeper advantage
  • 672 King/532 queen continuous coils with foam encased edge - provideds a strong, long lasting seating edge and increases sleeping surface

  • Continuous Support Innerspring - Provides superior support along the entire length of the body, and maintains proper spinal alignment
  • Space age pressure relieving memory foam - 1" layer of pressure relieving visco memory foam for added comfort. Visco memory foam contours and cradles your bodys curves

Just go to a couple different stores and lay on different kinds of beds until you find one that both you and your wife enjoy. Most stores will offer you a comfort guarantee as well so you can try out the bed you pick for a certain amount of days. Try to find a knowledgeable salesperson and research the beds you find comfortable, read reviews, and ask questions to get as much information you need to make an educated buying decision.

I'm sorry I can't provide you with any personal experience as I'm awaiting the arrival of my very first mattress purchase.

Well, i have tons of info for you, but my experience and yours will differ, often...ANY memory foam mattress will sleep warm or hot, you will notice it wherever your body makes contact with the mattress, owned 3 of them and all 3 this was an issue...Latex doesnt sleep hot and you are going to be advised here real soon to try a couple of latex companies and all I can say is Latex may be the way to go, but DONT forget that Costco has a company that sells them and it will cost less than the other places, but any Latex is probably better than any spring bed...

Good luck, I am going to send back a Serta I just bought this week, it will be the 7th bed I have bought and returned in 10 months...includes tempurpedics and so on...

Well, I think I've decided based on some great reviews and the flexibility that FloBed offers. Had a very long discussion with them. I will be ordering the split king and getting the adjustable dual base. To begin with, we are going with Firm over Firm and Firm over XFirm based /Vzone is what they called it.

Let's see how it goes. I'll scratching my head on the pricing :) :).

Congrats luvdodo!

Please keep us updated. Sleeping painfree on my FloBed is worth every penny I paid. I hope you will feel the same. smiley

Your foam wore out.  Maybe the springs did too, maybe not.  If you buy another off-the-rack bed it will happen again.  Not the issue of the springs necessarily, it is the foam.

If you have lots of disposable income and don't mind a bucketload of stress as bed after bed do the same exact thing as this one did(and no it says absolutely nothing in the description...but sounds divine, doesn't it?!), go for it.  Budgy has  a top of the line bed that he described here before that is apparently lasting well for him.  Sometimes expensive beds do last longer, but many are expensive just because of the name and not the quality components.

Personally, I've been most satisfied with having a mattress made for me, simple and the old fashioned way...and it was less expenisve as well.  Not only that, but it eliminated the hassle of trying to get a Big S brand to stand behind their product's comfort and longevity because you are playing by their rules which are not on your side.  (I had a Stearns and Foster bed that failed within three months...foam died...and they were horrible about it and did NOTHING.  Still angry about that).    If I need something done to my bed, I can go directly to the owner and have them adjust it.

I live in central CA and go to A Better Bed in Fresno for beds.  They are made the old fashioned way with good springs, cotton batting, and whatever foam/thickness you choose on top.  Latex, memory, P/U foam, combination.  Flippable too.  You can even get a spring box spring which isn't easy to find.

You could start by doing mattress surgery.  Cut the top off your mattress just below the piping line and open it up.  You can see what is inside, and I'm betting it is layers of cheap p/u foam that can be replaced by Latex for a much better feel.  If you have a king size, you can replace the foam with twin XL foam pieces and you and your wife can have different layers.  Your springs might be okay.

Good luck.
