Mattress cover from FBM
I have my mattress configuration pretty much set up but Im trying to decide on the zip-top cover. I know FBM will make the cover to any thickness you need but Im wondering if I should give myself a little extra space in that cover due to thickness variations. My mattress will be 3 layers at a total of 9" thick. Should I get my cover exactly 9" or 10"? Any input is appreciated. Thanks |
Re: Mattress cover from FBM
Hi 337, I'm no expert on mattress covers but I will make a comment or two. First of all I have a 6" latex core and 1" of pu foam on order from FBM. I already have a 2" medium latex topper that I ordered from them. I wanted to try and get a feel of latex on an interspring mattress before ordering the whole mattress. This will make a 9" mattress when finished. I discussed the matttress cover with Carlo at FBM. First of all I don't think that they make covers in any size, they just have the gray striped ones 8"thru 12". The one with the zipper on all four sides only comes in 8". I have read here that you can get 9 inches in the four zippered sided ones. I confirmed this with Carlo,he said it would be ok. I don't have experience with latex but after reading a lot of threads, it seems that it may change the feel sightly when in a tight cover. Carlo said the cover would handle it without tearing up. In my opinion the cover (gray stripped one) with the zipper on one end would be very difficult to get just the 6" core in. FBM will install all of the latex in the cover if they have all the pieces on hand and then ship it that way. That let me out as far as them putting the latex in the cover. After handling and dealing with the 2" topper' I did not want to try and stuff a 100 lbs(6") latex core in a cover with only one side zippered. Latex will not slide so good. The only thing worse to do, would be try and roll this foam up and ship it back). Soooo I ordered the 8" cover with the four sides that will zip. I may try it with all 9" inches in it, but I can handle that with the zippers. If I don't like the feel I will place the 1" of pu on top and have a 8" covered mattress. It will need replacing after a few years anyway. I don't have a feel as to how much pu I will need to make the mattresss sleep well. I personally did't like the idea of a floppy mattress cover. Why don't you call Carlo and discuss this with him, that's who they referred me to. I'll make another thread when I get a little further along with my mattress, it should be here this week. One last word, if possible be prepared to air the latex before using it,mine had a strong latex odor. My wife would not sleep on it before airing it a couple of days. Good Luck! Bear |
Re: Mattress cover from FBM
Thanks for the replies. I am really happy I posted about this b/c I didnt realize the striped cover was zippered on one side. My set up is going to be as follows: 3" HD36 3" Lux 3" MF I dont really like the feel of latex but then again I dont like the feel of the MF mattresses that dont have a cover. So I am going to buy a 2" cuddlebed and put on top. I didnt realize you could get a 9" terry cloth cover from FBM. I will go that route and hopefully they will put the whole thing together before shipping. Thanks for the input. |
Re: Mattress cover from FBM
333, I was thinking latex mattress. I have no idea about how the other foams would react in an 8" cover. The terry cloth cover is a 8" cover. Carlo said it was much softer and more flexible than the striped. Bear |
Re: Mattress cover from FBM
Oops. Bear is correct about the size of the terry cover; it's 8 inches, not 9 as I mistakenly said in my previous post. However, as I said, there was no problem fitting the 9 inches of latex inside the cover. |
Re: Mattress cover from FBM
Thanks again for the responses. I am a little concerned about having too many layers together so I am thinking of going with just 5" of HD36 and another 3" of MF. I am still trying to decide the ILD of the MF to use. FBM has two different ILDs. OMC and BedInABox use MF similar to the 'white' MF offered by FBM. I decided to go with the HD36 instead of Lux b/c I am concerened with the firmness of it. Other manufacturers making similar mattresses use a similar combination to what Im doing. I am going to cover the whole thing with a terrycloth cover and a 2" cuddlebed. |
