MY FLOBED CAME!
Whew! The Flobed arrived this afternoon in 3 boxes! I got all the pieces out and checked them to be sure I got everything ordered. I couldn't put it together right away because I was waiting on a foundation to be delivered. They finally brought the foundation around 6:30, so I got to work! Originally I intended to take pictures of the process, but then my DH came home and announced he wasn't helping, so I huffed all the pieces upstairs, laid out the cover as instructed, and began taking out the individual layers. Aside from each piece being heavy and unwieldly, it really wasn't too difficult to get the layers on the mattress cover. and adjust them. I did have to stop and take a 10 minute break after getting the first 2 layers on the bed (4 pieces). Layer 3 went on . . .and then the topper! That's where I ran into a little snag. I put the soft covoluted top layer on, and it's waaaay too big! It's marked a queen, but I'm pretty sure it's a king, lol. I get it lined up top to bottom and along one edge, and it overhangs the other side by about a foot! So . . .temporarily, I folded that piece up and set it aside and zipped up the other 3 layers into the cover. First impressions are, this bed is amazingly comfortable! I was worried about getting a firm/xfirm/xfirm, and I'll have to sleep on it a few nights, but oh la la! It's comfortable just to lie on. Very supportive, springy and bouncy, but not hard. Tomorrow I'll have to call Dewey and have a chat about the top layer. What I'd like is permission to just cut that piece to size without losing my 90 money back guarantee. I've been waiting so long for a comfortable mattress, I don't want to mail this one back and wait for another convoluted piece. If he says ok, I'll trim it down, unzip the cover, put the convoluted layer on . . . and ahhhhhh. I'll do as Eagle and report back on my experiences with my Flobed, though maybe not in the same precise detail. I can't wait to go to bed! |
Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
Kimberly: I am curious what Dave Turner had to say regarding your zipper problem and you're too short top convoluted layer of latex? I was also wondering if you discussed with him about the Vzone bed? |
Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
I haven't called him yet. It's just a case of inertia - does it really matter that the topper is about an inch too short both ways? Is it worth the hassle of unpacking another new topper, getting the old one off the bed and putting the new one on and zipping the thing up again? Then packing the old topper and lugging it to a UPS store to be shipped back? But now I'm thinking of ordering a medium layer, and if I do, I'll discuss it with him at that point. |
Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
You are right, Linda - my organic cotton Savvy cover is not stretch fabric. It is a heavy cotton, but not stiff - it's actually quite soft (I can't recall the proper term, but Savvy's cover is "buffed" or "rubbed" to soften it) So, while it's not the gorgeous damask found on nicer innerspring mattresses (or FloBed), I think it might hold up better to numerous openings over the years. (but will we be opening our beds up that much once we get it right?) Our brass zipper zips along fast without pushing in of latex etc, and it hasn't gotten caught on anything (yet). Unfortunately for Savvy, some people are put off by their cover because it's so "plain", but I recommend either finding a store that has a bed to try, or get the free samples from Savvy. We did both and got the samples first. - including a sample of the cover & wool. When we saw the bed in the store, my initial reaction was "what a great-looking cover"! I wasn't expecting much in looks, but it's all quality, both in looks and feel. I do have to admit that Flobeds has an adorable cover! However, I would only see the sheep once in awhile as we use a nice mattress pad (doesn't everyone?) so the look & feel of the cover didn't place high for me. I guess the practical side of me said to go with durability - and I have to say I am very pleased. I'm very happy to read that all of us who made the difficult decision to go with an expensive latex bed, are having sweet dreams! |
Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
Catlover: I agree with Kimberly that the FlowBeds cover is quite nice. Their approach is different than Savvy Rest, but that certainly doesn't make it superior. The major thing you want in a cover is that it holds the latex correctly, that the cover is easy to take off and put on, and most important of all, it sleeps comfortably. All of this my FlowBeds cover accomplishes. But I must say that the pictures you took of your bed completed with the cover in place made a very attractive looking mattress. I am happy that you like your new bed, and hope you have many years of enjoyable, and restful sleep upon it. |
Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
I've had my Flobed for a little over a month now, and thought I'd report back. I ordered both sides F/XF/XF. We slept like that awhile, then - My first change was to make my side F/F/XF and his side XF/XF/XF. I do like a cushy feel and thought this would be more to my taste. But, I found my side too soft and started sleeping on his side, which felt better. Then a few weeks ago I switched them back to F/XF/XF and F/XF/XF. This still felt too soft to me. So, I ordered another XF layer, which arrived yesterday, and now I have XF/XF/XF (me) and F/XF/XF (him). This was more comfortable for me. Sleeping on the Flobed has improved my sleep. I won't say the back issues have disappeared, but I'm much more able to have a good night's rest, and I don't wake up in the morning with back issues that were *caused* by the bed. Last night was a little rough to judge because my back was sore from moving around the latex layers and folding up and packing the Firm layer I'm returning. Also, the day prior, I was moving heavy furniture in my home (2 couches and a heavy entertainment unit) so my back really hurt. If we keep the Flobed though, I think the XF/XF/XF is the right combination for me. All three XF layers are 36 ILD, and this seems to emulate the feel of the Rhapsody bed (in Temperpedic terms) as being very firm with just the amount of give needed to alleviate pressure points. The 2" convoluted topper is 28 ILD. There seems to be enough room within the mattress cover to add another one inch layer, and I'm interested in exploring maybe an inch of 32 ILD below the convoluted layer. My husband has complained on and off about not being able to sleep and being uncomfortable. He asserts that he can sleep on anything, but I'm not sure the Flobed is comfortable for him. He liked the Tempurpedic Rhapsody and he wanted that bed. When I dragged him to the showroom to try out the Tempurpedics, he laid on several, and when he got to the Rhapsody he just fell asleep on me, lol. I let him snooze for 15 minutes, then work him up and he said "I like this bed!" I'm going to give this another month with the Flobed and then and sit him down for a heart to heart about speaking up if the mattress isn't working out for him. Or, maybe I'll have him sleep on my XF/XF/XF side for awhile and see if he likes that better. |
Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
Hi Kimberly and Others, Thanks for the update. Maybe I'm not remembering but I thought you had said awhile back that your husband loved the Flobed (while you were the one who wasn't so sure)? Anyway, I was wondering what happened... did it just started feeling less comfortable to him or what (or am I not remembering correctly?) Here's an update from my experience. I kept my Flobed even though I can't say it's totally perfect... but then I don't think any bed set-up is (at least not for me). As I mentioned in a post awhile back, since obviously it wasn't possible to take what I felt was best (as per my needs) from several different companies, I picked the one I felt overall most confident about in terms of both product and customer service (and which allowed returns). And that was Flobeds (and they were indeed great to work with). I find my comfort level changes so much depending on my overall body comfort level (I have some ongoing health issues). And I definitely seem to be in the "princess and the pea" category of people... Right now I'm trying to resolve the problem that the pain in my hip is much exacerbated when I lie on my side, which is my preferred sleeping position. This isn't so much a problem with the bed as an ongoing health problem I have. Anyway, even with a soft layer on top, I'm getting it, but not as badly as with a medium layer on top (though the medium layer on top feels better in terms of my lower back). Actually the medium top layer would be fine if I could just learn to sleep only on my back.. but I keep finding myself turned onto my side (conditioned by years of side sleeping). As I also mentioned on another thread awhile back, I have a wool mattress pad (from 20 years ago) which works very well for me in terms of temperature regulation. I know may other people have posted that the wool pads don't work for them or even make the bed feel warmer, so obviously we're all very different in terms of what works. Anyway, I don't know how my pad compares to say the snugfleece or others. But in looking at a pictures of others, mine appears to have longer fleece (hooked to a woven wool backing) and not as dense, so it packs down quite flat, though it's still thickesh. It's also not superwash (which may or may not make a difference; superwash wool actually coats the individual wool strands with a type of synthetic polymer in order to keep the natural wool barbs from felting when washed. It also makes the wool feel softer, but I don't know if it has any impact on the feeling of heat). I have actually always preferred the feeling of the latex without the extra wool topper pad, but every time I took it off, I was less comfortable heat-wise (even thought I tend to run cold and have a lower body tempo than average, I would get slightly sweaty without the pad). However, because the pain in my hip has been getting worse, I decided to take it off again, and see if that would help or hinder the pain. Turns out I am a bit more comfortable without it in terms of pressure point and nerve pain . Go figure because wool pads are suppose to really help with these things! Just goes to show, I guess, how individual we are and sometimes it goes quite contrary to how it's "suppose" to work. I'd still prefer the pad in terms of temp regulation, though it's not as problematic as it was now that the weather here is very cold (and our bedroom is quite cool as we have no central heat, though it's also not very hot at night in the summer where I live, but it's much, much colder now). So I guess I'm one of the people who find the wool pad "cooler in summer", which I know goes against common sense and experience for others! If I have to continue to leave the wool topper off in terms of getting improvement in the hip pain (though I wish I didn't have to), I am going to try and find a very lightweight wool mattress cover instead of cotton. By the way, I just checked my old topper and it's a "Woolrich Orthorest". I don't know if they are still made. I got mine in Canada over 20 years ago. I used it for years on my old mattress (along with another wool-filled topper), but that bed had only one layer of very thin, very firm Dunlap latex. I think with the Flobed it actually interferes with the mattress comfort (except in term of heat regulation) instead of helping as it did with my other. But then my Flobed is way softer and thicker, so not comparable at all to my old bed. I still have my bed set up (top to bottom) soft, firm, firm on one side and medium, medium, X-firm on the other. ( I'm 5 51/2, 130 lbs). My husband is flexible in terms of what he can sleep on (most anything), even thought his side was suppose to be medium, firm, X-firm. Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
Hi Linda! You know, I think you're right, I did post that my husband loved the bed. He told me he did and I think he still feels that way. It's just that he's been complaining about lack of sleep lately, and has seemed to be having trouble getting comfortable in bed, which has me wondering. However, this could also be due to other factors, like stress, and he did hurt his leg running last week. Or it could be because I've been rearranging layers to suit my experimental needs and when he gets the leftover layers, they aren't quite right for him. To be honest, he's so fed up with this mattress odyssey (as are my other family members) they roll their eyes and tune out every time I start talking about them. They just clam up. So I'm just guessing. Linda, it really sounds like you need that zoned layer that Flobeds sells. That way you could vary the softness/firmness by body zone and take care of your hip and back at the same time. When I told them I had hip and lower back pain, they recommended the zoned layer, but I didn't want the extra expense and knowing myself as I do, I was worried I would be continually indecisive about what firmnesses to put in each zone. |
Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
Wow, I just saw my last post and the paragraph formatting didn't go through. Don't know why, but it sure makes it unreadable. Sorry for those of you who persisted through it. Anyway, I just tried to edit it and put doublespace between paragraphs and have no idea why it's still coming out as one long paragraph. If anyone can help, let me know and I'll try again so it's more readable. Kimberly, I did try the zoned layer but it didn't seem to work for me... The second night I was on it I woke up with terrible pain; I think cause I had moved off the "correct" zone and gotten twisted or something. I don't know, Perhaps I should have given it a longer try, but I just felt it wasn't for me (which is what I felt in the beginning and so didn't order it with the bed originally). Good luck with tweaking your bed, and I hope your husband ends up liking it. I know my husband got tired of hearing about bed stuff during my decision-making process and then with shifting around the layers... Well as I said, it's not perfect, but I think that's primarily cause of my health issues.... it's very good, given those, though, and waaaaayyy better than any other bed I've ever had. I'm hoping to get adjusted to sleeping on my back which will help I think. |
Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
Linda: I can't imagine what the problem is with the formatting, as I have not had any problems using Firefox. I avoided the zoned FlowBeds due to the same problem that others have mentioned regarding, "making up my ever loving mind" about what firmness I was going to want. Given the experience I've had so far, I feel confident I made the right choice by avoiding zoning. I am going to try something next week that I've been quite interested in for some time now. I have ordered a firm layer of blended latex. I will be able to roll back and forth, from one side of my California King to the other, and check out how I like a blended piece of firm, compared to a 100% botanically grown natural firm piece of latex. It will be worth the trouble to actually have my own laboratory and check this difference out. I will be sure to report back and let everyone know what I think. Linda, keep the faith and just keep on trying till you find the proper firmness for you. This is the luxury that we who have purchased from FlowBeds have. I can't help but feel some of the criticism that we have endured lately from folks who seem to think that those of us who post possibly about FlowBeds, are shills, is due to the fact that they are a little envious of our ability to have access to this generous exchange policy. I know I have paid more to FloBeds than I would have had to pay to some other niche market latex suppliers. But it was worth it to me to have the generous exchange policy, and return policy, given the fact that our mattresses were purchased over the Internet. Re: MY FLOBED CAME!
Thanks for your comments Eagle. I see that my second post is also coming through as one long paragraph. Earlier today I updated my browser (Safari) to the latest so I don't know if that could have something to do with it...? Strange, as I know my earlier posts to the group didn't have this problem. I have enough different layers to try many combinations (and have done so) and the two I described seem to be the best and the ones that I've returned to over and over again. As at this point, I am hoping I can learn to sleep on my back (the bed is quite comfortable that way) and that some health issues will perhaps shift for the better (they've been even worse as of late)... If anyone has experience with wool mattress pads, and have any recommendations, please let me know. Thanks. I'm posting this as 4 paragraphs, but unfortunately it will probably come through as one long one. Oh, just had an idea to try; will see if that works. Sorry to any of you reading this if it doesn't. Then off to bed. It's late! Linda |
