As you know I have been trying to get back to the "sweet spot" that I achieved on my newly operated-on Englander a few months ago. For some reason it was great at first then mysteriously didn't work for me any more. So lately I've been trying various configurations. Two nights ago I put my fake Venus foam on top. So it was like this from the top down: Venus 1" foam (fake Venus sold by Overstock) 32ILD natural Talalay latex 1" HR foam on bottom Englander springs That did not work for me. Then, as I have done before, I reversed the memory foam so that it was not on top, but rather under one layer. This worked for me. This also has been the way my wife has been using it for some time. Everyone says memory foam should be the top layer when used, but we find that it is better for us as a 2nd layer. (Of course, in my case, who knows? It may stop working for me tonight! But I have used it this way successfully in the past.) Just wondering if anyone else has found this works for them - memory foam UNDER another layer? You are probably isolating the springs from you and that is making it more comfortable; just a thought. Leo3, Actually I am using a relatively low amount of foam on top of the springs. Most mattresses - even firm - come with about 3" or more of cheap foam on top of springs. I went with a lesser amount for awhile and while it wasn't too bad, I went back to having a bit more. But I've always felt that having more than 3" doesn't work for me. I may try it again some day, but no, usually I do want to get some effect from the springs. All I really did here since my last configuration, was to change out one layer of latex - my old layer of mystery latex - for the 1" layer of fake Venus. |

Sandman, I recently came to the conclusion that the "mystery latex" I formerly had, is probably not softer than the 32ILD natural Talalay. I think it might be synthetic instead of natural, but it feels about the same ILD. I always thought it was a softer piece, like 24-28ILD, but I had nothing to compare it to except from memory. Now that I have the 32ILD Talalay natural piece, and we compare them, it feels like the old piece is probably very close to the same ILD. I WISH I had a softer piece of Talalay and that is probably my next purchase, but I have to wait a while before buying more. At least for now this present configuration with the fake Venus under the Natural Talalay is working for me! Thank goodness for that! Any time I get a night's good sleep, without back pain, I am thrilled!  |

The only reason I'm replying to my own post is to set the record straight... As I should have known after all this time, the fake Venus softened up too much by the 3rd night and I woke up this morning with lower back pain. Now I have to replace it with latex, and/or reconfigure my mattress again. This time, I'm REALLY DONE with memory foam! In fact, I"m taking it off and calling Overstock to get a refund for misrepresenting it as real Venus when it is not. What is weird is that they are still selling it as "Venus". I may have to fight them on this.... |

I assume you are now considering adding 1" of new latex to replace that or the fake Venus? |

Yes, if I can get my money back on the Venus from O'stock, I will buy a piece of soft latex, maybe 24ILD, natural. I think Rocky Mountain has it, or is it SleepEZ or both? Anyway, that's what I want to buy. Right now I just replaced the Venus with my synthetic latex layer because that was easy. If it doesn't feel right, then I might try the same thing with the wool on top. And if that doesn't work, I'll HAVE to buy another layer of latex, asap. |
| I have Flobeds latex that's coming up on 10 years old, and the latex cores are starting to dry and crack around the edges, so that's not necessarily an indication of synthetic, is it? |
