Need advice on ILD and 1 or 2 inch mattress topper to get

I bought a new mattress over the summer that ended up being way too plush/soft for me and woke up every morning with lower back pain. I am a stomach sleeper, and sometimes side sleeper. I then exchanged it for a very firm mattress (which was probably too extreme) and now I find I not only toss and turn all night (mattress too firm), but I am having a hard time going back to my usual stomach sleeping position without nearly instant lower back pain. (For reference, I'm in my late 30's, in good shape, no health issues, weigh 135 lbs). I need something to soften the mattress as it's pretty uncomfortable as is.  At first I was thinking of getting a memory foam topper, but I read on here someone else with the same problem purchased one, and the sinking in feeling bothered her lower back all over again. So, I am considering a latex mattress topper.

After hearing good things about Sleeplikeabear.com, I was thinking of getting this one: http://www.sleeplikeabear.com/talatech_toppers (Expensive but they do have a decent return policy).. Would the 14 ILD be way too soft and should I go with a 1" or 2" topper?

Another choice is this one: http://www.foambymail.com/LatexTQueen.html.  Cheaper, but not sure what quality is like.  They list theirs as 20 ILD for soft.

I just need a good night's sleep. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

I am torn between shelling out more money for this or a cheaper version at foam by mail or mattress by mail. I need to decide one way or another...

So you are putting this latex on top of an existing innerspring bed? Do you have any specs on the bed? Is there any latex (of other foam) in it? If so, how firm is it?

If your bed has 3" of 20 ILD foam on top now, adding 1" 24 ILD won't do much - maybe make it firmer? On the other hand if there is 3" of 40 ILD on top 1" might help.

If you can't figure that out, can you at least get to a mattress store that has latex, or latex toppers? If you can find a firm bed in a store that is similar to yours, you can try toppers there and see what feels good to you. I personally don't think 24ILD latex feels very soft, but everyone is different...

My mattress is an innerspring Simmons Beautyrest Ridgewood Firm (and it's pretty firm!)..I talked to a  rep at Sleep like a bear and told her of my sleeping habits (stomach sleeper, sometimes side, etc) and she recommended the 24 ILD which is plush/soft but not the most plush one, or perhaps the 19 as well.

Seach shovel99 and mattress surgery.  I am 170lb back side sleeper with lower back pain and have been all through the 1 inch toppers, and have explained what and why... to long to repeat here.

Very briefly: I suggest you start with 4lb Eco Green comfort dreams 1 inch memory foam topper from www.overstock.com... which I have chosen over both the 14 ILD from SLAB, which I literally bought once... returned with $36 shipping charge from Atlanta.... and later came back and bought it again... looking for something slightly softer than the 20 ILD from FBM.   I found the 14 ILD too soft... both times, now... and regret the expense.  Not many here at this form have stated that they have, like or need 14 ILD, and as one of the most picky about soft, warn you that it is a small minority.

I have found that ony memory foam gives(me) the best curve fitting with the least thickness, and I only use 1 inch on top of supersoft poly 1 inch (foamdistributing.com), 1 inch 20 ILD from FBM, another 1 inch of supersoft... on top of bare springs.  Mem foam accommodates by melting to your shape... latex is a natural spring: the harder your body pushes .. i.e. displacement... will exactly equal the force at that point... so the shoulders and hips will feel the pushpack the hardest.  The cons of mem foam are that it will sleep hotter... molecular structure plus the fact that it tightly wraps as it conforms.. so there is less air space.

I am very sensitive to heat... and find one inch of the 4 lb density ... if slightly warm, well worth it.

The last piece of 20 ILD 1 inch latex I bought from FBM (month ago) was of the highest quality... the first 1 inch piece I bought 2 years ago had a couple of 2x2 repairs... glued in patches... but did not affect the sleepability and was easily still worth the savings.  Both of these 1 inch pieces appear to have identical softness, though a 2 inch piece I bought from FBM earlier felt substantially firmer than two layers of the one inch.  Phoenix has noted that the thicker you stack latex, the firmer it feels.

The econ green 1 inch queen mem foam will be less than $70... don't recall exactly, but IMHO is what you should start with.
