I'm in Canada and searching for a softer latex topper is getting futile. However I did find this product and wonder if anyone has heard of it or tried it? |
There's no BB&B here in Quebec. Many chains won't come here because they don't want to have to change their names and special order all new French signs. I could order a latex topper here in Canada from a place The Mattress and Sleep Company, but one of the few I see is $385 (including cotton cover) for a full size and it's composed of:
That seems totally out of whack to me. The Foambymail prices seem quite low, but not overly low, compared to others I looked at but for all of them, the firmer and more dense they are the higher the price I believe? As I quoted above, it says their topper is 5.6lbs, but I have no idea what that means. The place you visited that wants $430 for the same(?) product..hard to understand unless the internet sellers have very high volume which would lower prices? The fact that you say the 2" topper you tried gave an approximation of a pillowtop mattress is very helpful - that's what I really wanted to know. I want that "cloud-like" feeling, like sleeping on a giant marshmallow! I even originally considered buying the pillowtop mattress I tried, since it was like heaven, and doing the surgery I read about here down the road, but that seemed a little extreme to me. Plus the thing was so darned heavy I think even putting sheets on it would be an ordeal and rotating it, impossible. Thanks a bunch One final question - did you notice a smell on the toppers you tried? I've read complaints about that and I'm sensitive to smells - even nice ones. |
I've heard that all natural latex does not off-gas or smell. I didn't smell anything with his latex toppers. I don't know about blended synthetic/natural latex, but I sort of doubt it would off-gas or smell. I was pretty surprised about his price for a full size topper. Perhaps he was mistaken. I might check again. Memory foam smells absolutely terrible when it is new - like death, formaldehyde or something. Yuck. I would describe latex as 'springy' feeling. Makes sense as it is latex rubber and rubber is springy. Gives the softest thing to lay on if it's the right comfort level for me. I'm really interested in latex from now on. I've got a memory foam set coming tomorrow as that was the best I could do from Sears for now. If that mattress doesn't pan out, then I'm on to latex only. Latex does have an odour for sure, but most do not mind it. Natural latex and synthetic latex both have distinctive odours to them. It certainly is harder to notice in a mattress versus say a pillow however. |
Latex mattresses, yes. Toppers, no. Costco has one but it's over 30 ILD and I don't want that. You're right, it's very tough to buy something "blind", which is why I keep bugging everyone with my questions! I think I have all the info I need now to make my decision. Thanks to all for advice and links.

I wouldnt say that price is totally out of whack - for example Sleep like a bear's price for a 2" full size blended talalay topper is 272 with no cover. Covers can be tough to find cheap. SLAB's covers go for over $100. of course you may not need a cover... Another reason so many go for Foam by mail, along with the good prices on the latex, they basically throw in a terry cloth cover for cheap. I can tell you my impressions on latex toppers - I tried 14 ild and 19 ild 3" toppers and definitely felt the encompassing floating-on-a-cloud feeling with both. I tried the 14 ild on a much firmer bed and it wasnt the same, I could feel the firmer surface through the topper - bottoming out I guess you'd call it. Doing the same with the 19 ild, it didnt feel like it bottomed out - still good and soft. I do think incrementally softer layers make a difference, but one layer may work for you if you find the right combination of support/softness and thickness. I cant speak from experience but many do say the FBM 20 ild is firmer than other manufacturers 20ild. something to consider if youre thinking of going that route.
