Hi, everyone. Looking for a 'plan B' to fall back on in case we can't get our Flobed to work, I talked to a sales guy at a store that sells S-brand mattresses today. Wanted the sales guy's opinion about the 'firmest, built like a tank to last a long time that I can put toppers on' mattress and he actually said (hope you're all sitting down for THIS one): "Oh, the S-brand mattresses today are built 'MUCH' better than they were 3-4 years ago. NOW, they're building them to last a LOT longer than that 20-year old mattress you're replacing. They just don't break down, and you can expect a LOT of service from them". And then this gem: "You absolutely don't want to put a topper on the bed - THAT will wear out and you'll replace it. You want the comfort layers - like the FOAM - INSIDE the bed" (um, yeah. Sure). After my side stopped hurting from laughing so hard, I figured I'd come here and ask you guys.. Is this the biggest pile of BS you've heard yet this year? Or has something 'truly' changed with the S-Brands that we're just not yet aware of? Now, this company has been pretty good to work with on other occasions and I think they're generally a good bunch of guys. But I've found the quality of the experience and..sorry..'truthfulness'..DEFINITELY depends on the rep you are talking with..there's some good ones..and some obviously not so good ones. What do you all think? Is there some big change toward 'better' mattresses from the S-brands in 2011/2012 models? And are all the reports of collapsing PU foam, etc just a thing of the past? Or is this just another "will tell you ANYTHING to make the sale" situation? |
"Or is this just another "will tell you ANYTHING to make the sale" situation?"
Pretty much, IMO. I have two Serta mattresses - 18 and 20 years old - still in my home, and still serviceable, although of course not the most comfy since they've kind of flattened out. But there are no big dips or sags in them and of course no big puffy layer of super cheap foam on top of them either. I highly doubt the new one I bought last year will be in any useable condition 20 years, or even 5 years, from now. As for the salesmen: At the "Sleep Specialist" store where I got my bed, I am positive they are given a list of things they must say to customers, because they all said the same things to me on both visits I made. One of those scripted comments must be, "We all have _______ beds in our own homes!" as the other guys nod their heads "yes", because two different salesmen told me this about the two different brands I was looking at on different days. |
Good point Doreen! I was in a store once when their Serta rep was visiting. I overheard he and another sales rep discussing strategy and "sales terms"-- the sales woman was like "oh-- yes, "affordable luxury", I am totally going to use that line". It was classic. But- I agree with everyone. A load of garbage! The best beds we have and the ones that give us no trouble are all over 10 years old. And, the ones we've purchased in the last few years have all been junk! |
Another good scripted line came when I was inquiring about a bed and stated I had never heard of that brand. Salesguy immediately explains that a company making such a quality item needn't advertise. He compared the beds to luxury cars, saying that Jaguar and Rolls Royce don't advertise either. Whatever. |
My favorite comments sales people made when they were trying to sell us, was the warrantys. Half of them can't explain a warranty and what it means for it to be a limited one. In one store the owner even told us the warranty is just there to make you feel comfortable in buying the mattress. But if the mattress last two to three years, you got your money worth. Highly disappointing on how dumb they think we are. |

I understand your point budgy, but this bed definitely was NOT from "really high end exclusive mattress makers". It was a Kingsdown - hardly high end. I just hadn't heard it of because I hadn't shopped for a bed in 20 years. From what I read later, the only thing about it that's high is the profit margin which is why this brand is pushed around here. |
oh....lol; sorry Doreen. Oh and to the OP yes, regarding mattresses this is the biggest pile of BS I have heard yet this year. |
