Thoughts on this DIY mattress?

I need to buy a king mattress.  I sleep very warm and my wife sleeps very cold.  We both like the feel of memory foam but I think I want latex since it's supposed to sleep cooler.  I'm about 240 and she's about 130.  Both side sleepers.  I'm afraid we will get tired of whatever we buy pretty quick and want to change something.  So, I've decided to buy a lot of layers that can be swapped around to create about any feel.

Mine                                                          Hers

2" Latex ILD 20                                    2" 4# Mem Foam

2" Latex ILD 32                                     2" 5# Mem Foam

1" Poly HD36-HQ ILD 38                       1" Poly HD36-HQ ILD 38

1" Poly Lux HQ ILD 55                           1" Poly HD36-HQ ILD 38

2" Lux HQ ILD 55                                   2" Lux HQ ILD 55

With a total of 8" of foam I can always add 1" more and still get it in the Terry Case from www.mattressbymail.com.  It's about $750 and should last a long time.  What do you think?  Any comments appreciated.

OK, after considering the seam issue, maybe this would work?

That looks better and I've considered doing the same, softer for her, medium for me with a shared 2" ILD 20 topper.

I started with just the 2" ILD 20 topper and will evaluate it before making the next purchase.

OK, I decided to go another way.  I just ordered the Natural Comfort from OvernightMattress.com  http://www.overnightmattress.com/memory_foam_mattresses/naturalComfort-mattress-free-shipping/index.asp?size=TWIN

However, they swapped out the cover for a quilted cover (now obsolete, but they had 5 Kings in stock) and they put 3" of Natural Talalay Latex (28 ILD) on my side and 3" of 3lb Memory Foam on her side.  With the quilted cover (2" of 1.8 lb poly and 1" of Dacron) the seam can't be felt (according to them).  I like the 120 day Risk Free and the pillow top cover with dual 3-sided zippers is clearly a step up.  It is made with Tencel Fabric to help it stay cool.

The bottom support foam is 9" of M-Grade with 27 ILD.  I know there are better materials out there, but I think this is a decent compromise in terms of quality, cost, and return policy.

PS:  Thanks jimsocal for all the posts that helped me find these guys.  Brad was super helpful.  I also had very good support from SleepWarehouse.com

PSS:  I found out latex is available from vendors who do not have it on their websites.....worth a call to ask.

Interesting.  One of the other tabs claims this to be a "PureBliss <TM>" mattress.  I think companies would get more business if they had a note on their web sites that stated that they could customize the products and to call and ask.  I generally don't like calling and talking to sales people and rely on the web site to provide information.

Let us know how it works out; it might be a good source for inexpensive MF beds.  There seems to be quite a few posts lately with people seeking info about memory foam.
