Suggestion for a mattress needed for opposites (pure latex bliss?)

I'm looking for a new matteress, as the current one feels like it's broken, and causes backpain for both my husband and I (granted one reason is because we dont regularly sleep with our backs straight --- we're both side sleepers).  For background, I'm 5'3", 120lbs, and he is 6'3", 250lbs.

Anywho, we tested a bunch of mattresses.  The thought was originally that we wanted a firm mattress, but the seller at a local mattress store convinced us that we want one that keeps our backs straight.  Sounds like the right thing.  The mattress that we've both liked is the Pure Latex Bliss 10" nature mattress with a 3" latex topper.  Total for the two is $3,200 - which is rather a lot.  It just didn't make sense to me as, I dont understand why the below.

If I need a topper on a bed anyways, why can't I get a generic mattress (say, online, even if it is latex) and buy a topper at the store (like this one)?  Does my mattress actually matter?

Also, is there a more affordable alternative to the PLB Nature bed with the 3" topper?

Please help!  We really need a new bed  - our backs are dying!

There are certainly less expensive options.  You can build your own latex mattress and put a zippered case around it, buy from on-line latex mattress manufacturers, or buy a firm coil spring mattress (with minimal or no PU foam) and then put a latex topper on top.  I have an adjustable, all latex mattress from Flobeds but suggested my daughter get a firm coil mattress from a good manufacturer (because she didn't want to spend the money) and put a latex topper on top.  Both options work.  The best thing about building your own or buying one that can be adjusted is that you could use different toppers (softer or firmer) for each side of the bed especially if you have a king size bed.  Sleepez, SLAB and Mattresses.net also sell high quality latex on line or by calling and can give advice on how firm your toppers should be for different size sleepers.

I like the flexibility of changing firmnesses and mattress parts so I highly recommend buying something that allows you to do that.  Just stay away from PU foam if you can or the less the better, then use latex toppers to get it just right.  The base should be fairly firm (even if all latex) and then put enough cushion on top to make you comfortable but not too soft.  Too soft will cause back or spinal misalignment and cause pain.

See if there is a Savvy Rest dealer close to you. Have them configure a bed for you and yes it can be configured differently on each side.... Will be a liitle less than you posted for the PLB.

How do I build my own latex mattress?  And is it possible to build a mattress that's just like the Pure Latexx Bliss Nature 10" mattress?

I really discourage people from buying before trying. SleepEZ... and the other online discounters have a good product but they also have a very high return rate as a mattress is really on of things that needs to be tried. IN addtion used returned layers can get in from some online companies depending on the state that regulates it. This is probably one of the most important investments you will make take your time and test it out...
