Topper needed for FBM latex mattress?
| It seems most people buy a medium or firm 6" latex core and then add a 2" soft latex topper. Is the topper really necessary? Or is there a chance the 6" core will be sufficient, perhaps with a soft mattress pad? |

Twalkman, How long did it take them to ship out your mattress? I placed an order with them a few days and it hasnt shipped out yet. Tuan |

It appears that FBM isn't as real time as some companies. Amazon has spoiled us all. I ordered it last Tuesday and the mattress arrived today. The cardboard packaging looked horrible, but the mattress was secure inside all the interior plastic wrapping. Thanks to whoever had the original suggestion to open it on the bed. The latex looks good, and there is only a slight odor to my wife and me. It's in the gray and white cover and the size looks perfect. Even though this is for a guest bed, I'm going to spend some time testing it. The initial impression from laying on it is that I wouldn't think I'd want another soft topper as the mattress already has more give than I'm used to. I've got a couple of inexpensive mattress pads I can try putting on it for just a bit more softness. I'll report back in a week or so with how it sleeps (Longer will mean that it sleeps fine). Usage Update: I've got the 6" Medium FBM latex on a plywood platform. When I get on the bed I can feel the latex compress all the way to the plywood, but it's not a problem and everything balances out as I stretch out to sleep. I find the mattress very comfortable and I sleep fine on it. I normally sleep on my side. It feels like I 'sink into" the mattress, but not too much. I added a mattress pad to give a slightly more cushy feel. My wife, however, is not fully satisfied. She says her hips feel better, but she is getting some lower back pain in the morning. Since this is usually interpreted as a mattress that is too soft, there's really not anything we can do about it. She's only 135 lb, but she has had some lower back problems in the past. I guess this might be a reason to start off with the firm latex mattress and look to softening it as needed with toppers. |

| It sounds like if you are sinking into it, and your wife has back pain, that the medium ILD latex is not offering you enough support. You might look into getting a few extra layers of xtra firm and firm. I bet it would make a big difference. Sleeplikeabear sells individual layers of LI talalay latex. |

Kimberly, does it work to add firmer layers on top of softer layers? I didn't know you could do that. I'm hoping the problem will go away if my wife goes back to being a side sleeper. She had previously changed to a back sleeper because of the severe body depressions in our S&F mattress. |

You could even buy some very firm HR foam or any high quality very firm foam to put under it as a base. However with 6" of latex core, if it's too soft to give support, there it may not help much. If you had layers of foam, like 2 x 3" layers then you could alter it, but having one 6" layer is difficult to add support to if that's what it needs. |

The 6" latex core sits on a plywood platform so there's no way to make it firmer by putting something under it. I'm really not into the hassle of packing up a 6" core and mailing it back . (grimace!) It would be a gigantic box considering I can't vacumn pack it like the manufacturere. |
