Trying to decide on which Tempur - Cloud or Rhapsody

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to say foremost I'm happy I've found this site before I've purchased a new mattress. The last couple weeks I've been researching Tempur and latex mattresses and have concluded that I'm going to purchase either of those. I've had too many bad experiences with Coil mattresses sagging and I find the latex or foam to be more supportative.

So far I've found latex to be a bit too stiff for me and my wife. We've tried several Tempurs and it seems the Rhapsody and the Cloud Supreme feels the best to us. The Cloud is the most comfortable, where the Rhapsody feels a bit stiff.

I am concerned with the longevity of the Cloud; I'm around 200lbs and question whether it'll hold up over time. If the Tempurs soften up a bit I could see maybe the Rhapsody is the one to choose. I currently have a bit of back pain only when I'm sleeping and just wake up but I suspect its from my current mattress as its sagging terribly. During the day I feel fine.

I'm looking for some advice on owner's experiences, both good and bad.

Also, Canadian friends: Do you have a place in mind to get the best price for a price match?

Thanks in advance.

The Cloud is probably borderline enough support for you while it is new....yes it does feel awesome in terms of the initial feeling.

The Rhapsody will soften up with use over time....so it sounds to me like you have a much greater chance of being satisfied with the Rhapsody in the long term.

Thanks for the reply budgy. I'll go try them out again this week.

Such a tough decision.  I don't mind spending the money if I know I'm going to be happy, but the more I research a sleep system the more confusing it gets!

It sure is confusing.  Definitely a good idea to try them out as much as you can before you decide whats best for you

Did you try the Deluxe or Bellafina? I found the the Cloud and Rhapsody to be miles apart in firmness, with the Cloud being quite soft, and the Rhapsody being quite firm. (I believe the top layers of foam differ quite a bit in density, 4lb vs 7lb.) I found the Deluxe and Bellafina to fit in between the Cloud and Rhapsody, with the Deluxe being a little more "memory-foamy" than the Bellafina.

I think you owe it to yourself to try those two models before making your final decision.

Would there be any reason not to consider a Tempur? Just looking at both sides of the coin here.

It "seems" to feel the best, other than the price and off-gassing as long as I go a little firm and expect it to soften up a bit I'm not seeing many reasons not to.

Again, if there are any Canadians here on the board please feel free to point me towards a good place to price match :)

Cheers

Update: We decided to go with the Cloud Supreme. Wife loves it so far, however I'm finding it a little soft although I am sleeping well. I have concerns that if it gets much softer I will be unhappy.

Would it make sense to buy some HD foam for my side of the bed to help with this? Is there a tempur comparable product that I could use?

Or maybe I should cough up the extra $1000 and go get the Rhapsody. Of course the wife will probably think its too firm :( Just wondering what you think

Did you buy a queen or a king?  If a king you could consider changing to 2 twinXL's of different models on the same foundation.  The only problem with Tempurpedics in this regard is each mattress is a slightly different thickness, so you would end up having to put a layer of HD under the thinner half to make them level.

Thanks for the reply. We got a king. That is a good possibility though. The Rhapsody and Cloud Supreme has a difference of 1''.

Can you get high quality HD foam somewhere? If so where to?

Geez I should've built a mattress instead of forking out this much $.

Can't help you on the HD source as I haven't been in that market.  But here's a thought:  if you are a hiker/camper you can get through REI (USA) or MEC (CDN) those dense yellow sleeping pads that are tough as nails.   I share your concern that at 200 lb the Cloud Supreme could soften too much for you.  You never mentioned your wife's weight.  How long is your trial period?

Don't beat yourself up yet for going the retail route.  Although there are many success stories here on building mattresses the modular way, they have not been without considerable stress, strain and worry.  And it really is difficult to build your own memory foam mattress as compared to latex.

The wife is around 135 I believe, so I can see how the Cloud suits her better. Trial is for another month, so should be able to tell soon enough if its going to work.

Given what I have mentioned, do you think we're best to go with Rhapsody? I'd hate for wife to not like that one though. errgh!

I just don't know what to advise here - I'd hate to see your wife lose something that is working so well for her.  Maybe someone else here who has a Rhapsody could comment on how much, and how quickly they soften.  There's always the chance the CS may soften too much over time for your wife and a R would soften enough although the breaking in period would be tough on her.  That was why I suggested having a twin XL CS for her, and a twin XL Rhapsody for you, side by side.  But that is more expensive and there is the hassle of trying to make them the same height.  Have you talked to the store about that possibility and if they could give you a price break to do that?  I'm just out of ideas on this - sorry.

No worries I appreciate the advice though. If I knew I could find a HD layer somewhere for my side I'd just do that.

I think 1" of HD memory foam will be tough to find.  You could of course get 1" of firm latex.  Not sure if that will work though, and definitely will change the feel.

If you go for 2 twin beds, I would consider putting 1" of firm latex (or other firm foam) below the TP to even out the heights.  That wasy you do not change the feel of the TP very much.
