I think my wife and I have decided to try mattress surgery on our S&F queen size mattress with unbearable body depressions before we break down and buy a new king size mattress. Does anyone have a recommendation on what latex layer we should have on hand before we cut out the pillowtop?

That is hard to say, because it will vary depending on how firm you like it and how firm your springs are. I would say that you probably will want 3-5" of foam on top, assuming you are taking off all of the foam. Right now on top of my fairly firm Sealy springs, and I like my mattress a bit soft and cushy for side sleeping, I have from lowest layer to top layer: 2" of 32 ILD 100% natural talalay from rockymountainmattress 1" of 5lb. Sensus memory foam from Overstock 1" of 24 ILD 100% natutal talalalay from rockymountainmattress 1" of 4lb. mem-cool memory foam from Overstock. I also has a wool topper that put on top as the "cover" and temperature moderator (from Walmart, but there are plenty of others). This is probably slightly too soft and I am thinking of replacing 1" of the memory foam with 1" of firmer latex (around 19 ILD). Although, I prefer this over using just 4" with 1" less memory foam. I am not sure if I need the 2" of 32 as a base, but maybe it good to have that. I have thought at times that I would have started with 2" of 24 and maybe 1" of 32. So, you may want to start with 2 toppers. One a bit firmer like a 32 and around 24 . 1-2" increments are probably best to allow fine tuning. If you like a softer feel, then you probably will want something softer than the 24 above it. The memory foam is pretty cheap, and can add some comfort but not much in the way of support. I have found that the Sensus is better but too hot for me on the top layer.

OK. I'm trying to make a decision between starting with a 2" layer of 32 ILD, or a 1" layer of 24 ILD. Is it unlikely that anyone would be satified with just a single layer of either of those choices?
Do both Sleep Like a Bear and Rocky Mountain Mattress get their latex toppers from Latex International? Am I correct in thinking that SLAB allows returns of mattress toppers, while RMM does not? |
I don't think 1" or probably even 2" will be enough, unless you like a very firm mattress. It might depend on how firm your springs are. I think you might need both of those. 2" of 32 for a firm base level and 1" 24 for some softness. That is what I started with, and I still wanted to add more softness after that. However, I have a Sealy with interlaced coils, so I am not sure how that will compare to your coils. It is possibly they are softer than what I started with. Do you have any info. on what kind of coils are in the S&F? I assume you are going to put these directly over the coils? Are you adding anything else on top? Yes, they both sell LI and RMM does not allow returns of toppers. One issue you might have is if the S&F has individually pocketed coils. I am not sure if anyone has done surgery on a mattress like that. There might be an issue with the coils shifting around, once you cut the top off and reduce the structural support? You might need a tight mattress pad/cover to help hold things in place. This message was modified May 5, 2010 by sandman

Thanks.
I'll make a post of what I find inside the S&F. I'm hoping there are some padding layers I'll be able to use since it was a very high end mattress.
