What topper layering has been working for you now?

I have read past postings and some of you use to like a topper, and then decided later you didn't care for it.

Can we update on what topper layers you are using and what is covering those layers?  Particularly I am interested in padding my hip area.  If you could list what particular "ailment" you are addressing.  It seems like mostly people have back problems I have been reading here.  Thanks to anyone who responds.  It gets so confusing to try to figure out what is working for someone.

I couldn't remember who liked the Brylane toppers and who didn't.  I am one who is "trying to like it" but I either need something else on top or it is not for me.  I have 2" of the latex.  The 1" layer on the bottom is not as soft, and the one on top is soft.  It seems like such a nice soft good quality topper, why the heck can't I get it right?  It is when I put a mattress cover or all cotton sheet on top it changes the softness to hardness!  I am going to try a Carpenter 5 zone polyurethane topper as soon as it airs out, over the latex.

I guess the topper layering is not working for anyone?  I for one am at the end of my rope on trying different things.

Question:  How far are your hips (in your opinion) suppose to sink in the bed?  When I put 1" memory foam over 1" of carpenter zone PU topper, over 1" latex I thought I was being beaten by the bed.  After 1 tortured hour I took the memory foam off the bed.  It could be that the mattress cover changes the feeling of the memory foam (as it did for me on the Sealy memory foam bed).  It made it like a piece of cement.  Anyway I had marks on my hip that indicates to me I sink in too much.

I am thinking the latex may be the cause, or the mattress cover.  I was up until 4 a.m. with this mess.  I wish I could sleep standing up like my bird ;-)

Is there a topper solution to any of this?

I just tried a 3-inch memory foam Isotonic from Bed Bath & Beyond which I returned today.  It was very comfortable but just a little too comfortable if you know what I mean.  Plus it added 3 inches to my bed and none of my sheets fit (13 inch mattress + 3 inch topper).

Is there a consensus as to which toppers are better?  Is a soft latex topper a good idea or is foam still king for softness?

a sheet      over                      I like the feel of latex

I have a 1" soft latex, over            from foam by mail, guess it's talalay.....

2" medium firm latex(dunlop) over              from naturalsleepproducts.net

1.5" pu that's not very firm over

1" memory that I am convinced flattens and stays flattened.  I cut it so it's almost a foot from each side of the bed.  I think the spring coil ties on the sides of the springs make it hard on edges and a tiny bit lower in middle, so was looking for something to even it out a little.  Idon't like mf so I put it on the bottom                over

springs

I am 5'5", 135 pounds, female, side sleeper 3/4 of the time,  back sleeper wannabe 1/4 of the time.

I am happy.  This has been something like a year process.  I bought a Costco sealy and cut it up, kept a few layers and added latex.  Good luck!

I finally got the topper arrangement comfortable.  I stopped using the mattress pad and used my jersey sheet over the 1" memory foam, which is over the upside down 1" polyurethane topper (hated bump side up) and on the bottom is the 1" latex topper.  I slept without shoulder or hip pain!  But I do have wrinkles.  So not sure how to fix this.  I need thicker jersey sheets or some stretch fabric.  The mattress pad just doesn't work for me.

I also put the memory foam on my chair cushion, and I am more comfortable.

I agree with the theory of 1" increments.

As you already know, the topper layer that seems to be the best match for me is the Carpenter Dream Coil Omalon 1" topper. Over that is my fitted CuddleBed mattress pad/topper. Then a nice cotton sheet with a decent threadcount. NO jersey or flannel or satin. Nothing slippery.

I've tried latex toppers in different ILDS. I've experimented with different memory foam toppers. I've tried NO toppers. Feather beds, fiber beds. You name it. They all failed to make my back/hips feel good. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this arrangement I have now will continue to work for me. So far, so good.

For me, nothing is perfect. There will always be some nights when I don't sleep as comfortably as the night before, maybe. Part of that I blame on myself, ie; I could lose some weight and exercise more. Some of it I attribute to age. Let's face it, most of us slept like a baby when we WERE a baby. :) Not so much now. Creaky joints and hormones are my excuse and I'm stickin' to it! :-)

But, overall, I feel like I found a good match with my mattress and topper. I'm also fortunate that I have the ability to unzip my mattress cover and adjust the "innards". That's a huge plus for me. I haven't had to tweak anything since buying this Dream Coil topper, though. I hope it stays that way! I also hope my mattress guy continues to stay in business should I want to purchase something from him in the future.

BeddyBye, is the back of your Cuddlebed have polyester backing like all of the mattress pads have?  I have thrown out 2 mattress pads and returned 2, so you can see why I am reluctant to try this, and since I am almost 90% sure nothing will work over my layers I keep looking for the perfect solution.  I agree that I am not a spring chicken anymore either.   I could lose 20 pounds that would help, but I am not obese either.  Is there an easy way to lose weight as we get older ha ha!!!   Do hormones cause pain, I know they can cause night sweats and insomnia.  My shoulders hurt a bit, but that could be my pillow not being exactly correct.  But my hip pain is gone (hope for good).

I wish I could even get to see what bed you have, we don't have anything like your bed out in the southwest.  Hope yours continue doing good for you.  By the way the jersey sheet I have is cotton, you were saying they were hot?  Still can't find good quality jersey sheets, too thin.

I just looked at the "ingredients" of the CuddleBed and the top is 100% cotton and yes, the bottom is 90% polyester and 10% cotton. But, it's a nice feeling fabric. Not cheap feeling at all. None of that "papery stuff" you sometimes see. Ugh. The backing is underneath, anyway. The 100% cotton with 400 thread count is what is facing where I sleep. It's got those satiny lines on it that you see with expensive sheets. And, my sheet is over that. I think this is a high quality topper. The polyester fill never shifts around or sinks in. I like that the squares are small, too. Makes for a tighter top. And, the skirt is very deep and able to stretch over a thick mattress up to 21" with or without added toppers. Anyway, I like it! :-)

Hormones mostly just cause the heat and insomnia for me. Not all the time, of course. Glad your hip pain is gone. And, yes, the pillow could be making your shoulders hurt.

Unfortunately for me, on Monday night I was wearing my smooth slippers in the kitchen and slipped on some water my dog slopped on the floor from his bowl. I went flying and felll directly on my ribs! I mean HARD. I didn't even catch my fall. (I have a habit of not doing that). My hands are always full, so I just fall flat on whatever body part is there. OUCH! One time it was my shoulder. That pain lasted several months. Anywaaaay, I have a fractured rib now. So my mattress hasn't felt great the last few nights. I simply cannot turn over without horrible pain. And, I can only sleep in one position. That makes my one hip sore. Then in the morning when it's time to get out of bed, I feel like a turtle who turned upside down and can't get up! Arrrggghh.

To me, Jersey sheets are too soft, hence making them feel hot. Reminds me of sleeping on a tee-shirt. I like my sheets cooler. So I don't buy them with a large threadcount. Something usually 400 or maybe 300-350.

Sorry to hear about that bad fall.  I bought a gift for a friend with a Schnauzer one Christimas from Petsmart, a nice size pad for where the water and food bowl go.  That way it collects the mess and you can see it.  I know how dogs driink and dribble it with their beard (Schnauzers anyway).  Funny (or not) I fell a few days ago in the dark coming back from the mailbox, my foot and tennis shoe went down the sidewalk gutter and turned my ankle, and my water bottle flew as well as the mail.  Since my bad knee buckled under and when I felt the pain, I used my hand to break the fall.  Luckily after a few days my ankle and hand were okay.  I do always break my fall with my hand.  Which could break your wrist.  It is always in the dark outside walking, so I must remember the flashlight.  Accidents do happen unfortunately.  Hope you mend soon.

Thanks for the info on the backing.  The Penneys mattress pad had polyester backing that was soft polyester, not papery, like the last one.  But it was too tight, so I didn't feel the under layers, and my hip hurt.  I wish the Cuddlebed was sold in the store so I could see and return it (if need be) somewhere besides Costco.

I may try my featherbed over the memory foam, poly, and latex layers.  If that feels hard I know the cuddlebed wont work.  I think anything on top makes it  hard.  I tried to make my pillow higher, which didn't help the shoulder pain.

Okay I have had a Cuddle bed over the 2 layers of 1" 3 lb. memory foam (from Overstock.com), then 1" Brylane latex foam under that.  Hips have no pressure pain now, but I stil have shoulder pain.  So I am thinking I should use a twin bed feather bed over the shoulder area (over the top section).  Then I would be really pain free.

There is no weight to push the shoulders down, so that is the problem.

Maybe you can do as some have here and cut foam pieces in varying ILDs or comfort levels. Then you can arrange them accordingly under the CuddleBed. If you need a little more support in your hips vs your shoulder, for instance. Or softness. Just a thought. My mattress maker has given me thin layers of foam for lumbar support if I wanted them. Turns out I didn't. But, he said you'd be amazed at how modifying just a small area can make a difference in comfort level.
