I was looking online for a terry-cloth mattress encasement (FBM's only fits up to a 9" mattress, inconvenient if one wants to add layers!), and i found one made by Luna. It's hypoallergenic, terry-cloth on top, full (well, 3-sided) zip, seems like a good product, and comes in a variety of sizes. Hooray!

This is good to know. Let us know how it works out, especially if the 3-sided zipper presented problems. Did you order online? If so, please provide link. Thanks for the info.

Ok, i messed up a bit--the cover arrived and was only zipped on two sides! Also, it seems a bit small, but i think i need to cut some of the foam. In any case, i got it from lunamattress.com, and it was $94 for a terry cloth-top king.

another thing i'm wondering is: Can i encase the base layers and the top layers in two separate mattress covers? I don't see why not.

It would work fine. You can also use a mattress pad to hold it together.
