True enough, but I still wouldn't bring a used mattress into my house without encasing it in a bedbug-proof encasement (e.g. Allerzip by Protect-a-bed). No, I'm not shilling for the company - I have just witnessed what my stepdaughter is going through and wouldn't wish that on anyone. Unfortunately, her sister-in-law brought them in her luggage off a cruise ship. You can be the best housekeeper in the world and still get blind-sided like she did.

I've done a lot of research on bedbugs because my step-daughter recently got them in her house. No latex mattress is going to be immune because they are covered in fabric and the bedbugs love to hide out and lay eggs in the seams of mattress covers.

I came across this forum about four years ago. I couldn't convince my wife to go Latex then, so we bought an expensive S-brand spring mattress and have been miserable for the last two years. Now that she's laid on a latex mattress and likes the feel, I've been trying to get back up to speed. I think I've convinced myself and her to go the DIY route so that if we don't like the feel of the mattress initially, we can change layers until we are happy. I refuse to pour thousands of dollars into a mattress (or mattress components) again that is inflexible and short lived.
Questions:
1. I'm not keen on anything that will have a shortish life, so nothing but latex for the base/core. Is foam by mail the best...

I just thought I'd chime in on my experience with plushbeds.com. I read the comments on ths forum, and decided to go with Plushbeds in the beginning of June. I found ther site to be very informative & just went with my instincts.
I'm 140 lbs and my husband is about 195 lbs, and we prefer a slightly firmer mattress as a softer mattress causes me too much back pain.
I initially called them to ask about the latex they use, if they have a firmer latex mattress, exchanging layers, shipping, etc. They only use 100% natural latex from Latex International and Latex Green, no blended latex, and were very informative with no pressure.
Although the default top layer on their 8" latex mattress is a 24" ILD...

Been doing a fair bit of research and that has led me here for a great deal of info but I am still a tad confounded.
Background:
Currently have a simmons pillow top model (yes I said the p word). It is only a few years old but it has become so painful to sleep in that both my wife and I wake up very sore all over just about every morning. I am annoyed at this due to the fact that I paid good money for this set not long ago so I am not wild about buying something else already. That being said I cannot deal with the pain and poor sleep anymore.
Me - 6' 180lbs - bad back, 2 bulging discs and a herniated disc. I like the plush comfy feel that you get with pillowtops...

First of all, I was convinced that latex was the way to go after reading extensively on this site and reading other reviews of people unhappy with both polyurethane pillowtops and memory foam. Our 10 year old conventional spring mattress was uncomfortable and I rarely slept well through the night. My husband prefers a firm mattress and I prefer a little softer, so we had to find something that would be a good compromise for the two of us. For this reason, we decided to only consider mattresses we could go a physically lie down on in a store. I just didn't want to deal with mail order and potential returns.
The mattress we ended up choosing was from the...
