Re: Looking to buy a latex mattress: few questions - Lynn2006

Terriks, That Tush Cush sounds like a great idea. I will look into it. Thank you.  Before the car accident, I didn't have any back problems but due to my slight scoliosis, I always just slept on very firm beds with no back pain.  Now I seem to need firmness with a little give.

Keven, My set up is for me and I am only 4'10.5" and 100 lbs so I wanted only a 1" soft topper so I would have some cushion but not a lot.  I then have on my right side, two 37 ILD natural latex Extra Firm (called that by FloBeds but each company calls their ILD's different firmness names) over a 46 ILD latex Core (the 44 averaged to a 44 and this is a blended latex core that surprisingly I had no reaction to and I am chemically sensitive so Talalay Latex must really clean the...

Re: Discount Furniture store with good Latex prices... what questions should I ask? - cloud9

I checked out your link. Bob doesn't seem to provide any information about the product on his website. You should ask if the mattress is 100% latex or if there is any PU in the quilting. The tufting in the picture has me concerned. This is often where the fillers go-- PU, Quiltflex, polyfil. You might also ask if the latex is American made. If it's Talalay this would mean LI and your assurance of a high quality latex product. So-called "natural" latex is mostly Dunlop process--not that that's bad--I actually prefer Dunlop since it is denser and more supportive--but some of it is of doubtful quality so--

Find out what kind of warranty the mattress comes with and if there is any return or exchange option with or without a restocking fee. Not everyone can sleep on latex and if you happen to be one of them it can be...

Mark - I had some confusion about your question....

You said "I have previously tried 2" ergosoft (100% natural latex not blended) that they claim is 16-18 ILD, but I found too hard (I don't beleive that this rating is comparable with the blended ILD rating)"

From what I can decipher, ergosoft is some sort of brand name that a mattress retailer calls their latex? I don't really understand how that soft of a piece of latex felt hard to you.  16-18 ILD is getting about as soft as it comes. Or do you think you had something else?  For myself, I can't imagine there is going to be that big of a feel difference in whether its blended or natural on a 2" piece. Not enough to make a 16 ILD feel hard.

If I didn't know anything other than you having a firm bed and needing it to be softer...

Here is some good info on Latex.... Do beware of anyone saying its all natural or 100%. From what I can decipher, there is no such thing.

This essay is on several of the latex bed seller's web pages and is informative.

The Truth About Latex
We have spoken with many people representing many companies about latex–how it’s processed, what’s added to it, how it’s shipped, how it’s tested, what all the numbers mean–and we know how confusing it can be. It’s partly because we are thousands of miles from rubber farms and partly because companies pitch whatever they sell as the best and everything else as inferior.

Let’s start with what everyone seems to agree on:

Rubber trees grow only within about 10 degrees of the equator, and they grow best on hilly slopes.

The trees are sliced at an angle, and a small amount of serum is collected daily.

The...

Dunlop latex for Europeans - eugene

Hello, I reside in Ireland and we don't seem to be well served in this area. The only sources I have found thus far is a Vietnamese organization called kymdan who have a branch in Frankfurt.

They seem fewer options on firmness. Their replies to my email queries were never adequately. Stuff like trail period..etc. There is EU consumer directive which states all online transactions are subject to a seven day "colling off" period, which this vendor did not confirm. A 90 by 190 centimeter mattress comes at 1100 Euros. When I called them on the phone they would only speak German or Vietnamese.  They have Australian branches but wondering whether it is worth contacting them as I still might end up with an unsuitable mattress.

The other option is the UK based Topsleep.
These guys seem to confirm the EU consumer directive but very inadequate when it comes to information on...

The Resilitex medium does not last long.  Don't keep it more than a year or two.  It noticeably softens, and can be very bad for your back (I speak from experience).  Foamex made a big mistake with Resilitex.

My husband and I bought our first Resilitex mattress from King Koil Mattressmart in Columbus, Ohio 4 years ago.

We have it on a King size pedestel stand, better than a box spring, more comfortable, lasts longer.

Before buying a resilitex mattress we returned at least 5 or more mattresses, we would toss and turn in pain and wake up in pain with all of them.  If there was support it would feel hard and unatural, if it was softer it would not give us support, we even bought a $10.000 tempuridec, awfull, like sinking into wet sand, the sand dries around you and you cant even turn over.

Natura uses boron, and wool in their eco/organic line.  Natura tends to "cut corners" and be dishonest about certain things in my experience.  Not to say all their products are bad, just be careful.  Boron is "natural" harmful in great quantities, most likely safe in small quantities.  I belive its boric acid that is used in rat poison......
Rocky Mountain Mattress Co's 7" Smooth Top Green/Natural Mattress - chihiro

When I began my search for the right All-Natural (actually meaning non-synthetic, 97-98% natural latex) Latex Mattress, Rocky Mountain Mattress Company of Utah looked like it was going to be the place I would buy it, because I was enamored by the great price.

This may be an excellent natural latex mattress for a person that is not concerned about the environmental and health impacts of their purchase, but BEWARE if you are looking for a truly Natural Product, as this one is NOT (though I can't say for the other Natural Latex Mattresses in their Green Line that are more expensive) completely.  The mattress is sprayed with a "synthetic rayon/poly substance" to meet the legal fire retardancy standards.  And it took me a long time to find this out as the sales representative I spoke to on the phone ("Dave") who was very nice and not at all pushy, and...
BEWARE of Natura World Green Series Mattresses - chihiro

Beware of the Natura World "Green Series"!!!

After purchasing their mattress (Manufacturer: Natura World, Line: Green, Model: "Pure") and bringing it home I read the little white label that says that the product legally meets fire retardancy standards and not to remove unless you've purchased the product and yada ya....

This product contains Polyurethane foam!!! The ingedient is hidden under the descriptions of "high quality quilting foam," and "this mattress is 98% natural."  Both I and the owner of the store I purchased the product from called the company and found out that the cover OVER the all-natural latex contains an inch of polyurethane memory foam!  Now, anybody who is conscienscious enough to buy an organic, natural (what does that word even mean these days?), green or "environmentally friendly mattress" knows that this is the FIRST substance in mattresses to avoid!

Less important, but also worth noting that the company tries...

All, I have read the many excellent posts and need to hone in on a choice for a Latex topper. Here is my situation:

  1. I have an excellent Serta Firm matress -- one year old. Latex top layer -- too hard, gives me shoulder soreness (and some hip soreness)
  2. I use a strip of 1.5" memory foam under shoulder -- can't use full bed topper as it is way too hot.
  3. I am 6'-2" 198 lbs.
  4. I have previously tried 2" ergosoft (100% natural latex not blended) that they claim is 16-18 ILD, but I found too hard (I don't beleive that this rating is comparable with the blended ILD rating)
From the many excellent posts:
  1.  Want to buy blended latex topper
  2. For my size and situation, should it be:
    • 1 in or 2 in thickness (many...
