I think my wife and I have decided to try mattress surgery on our S&F queen size mattress with unbearable body depressions before we break down and buy a new king size mattress. Does anyone have a recommendation on what latex layer we should have on hand before we cut out the pillowtop?

I don't think 1" or probably even 2" will be enough, unless you like a very firm mattress. It might depend on how firm your springs are. I think you might need both of those. 2" of 32 for a firm base level and 1" 24 for some softness. That is what I started with, and I still wanted to add more softness after that. However, I have a Sealy with interlaced coils, so I am not sure how that will compare to your coils. It is possibly they are softer than what I started with. Do you have any info. on what kind of coils are in the S&F? I assume you are going to put these directly over the coils? Are you adding anything else on top? Yes, they both sell LI and RMM does not allow returns of toppers. One issue you might have is if the S&F has individually pocketed coils. I am not sure if anyone has done surgery on a mattress like that. There might be an issue with the coils shifting around, once you cut the top off and reduce the structural support? You might need a tight mattress pad/cover to help hold things in place. This message was modified May 5, 2010 by sandman

Thanks.
I'll make a post of what I find inside the S&F. I'm hoping there are some padding layers I'll be able to use since it was a very high end mattress.
