What latex topper should I start with for mattress surgery?

I think my wife and I have decided to try mattress surgery on our S&F queen size mattress with unbearable body depressions before we break down and buy a new king size mattress.

Does anyone have a recommendation on what latex layer we should have on hand before we cut out the pillowtop?

Hate to break it to you, but honestly, I doubt you'll want to use any of the padding layers. The springs will be what you want to keep. MAYBE you can keep one of the top 2-3 layers if it looks good but chances are it will just be cheap pu foam. This is where the SCo's make a lot of money: they charge you $200-400 more for a pillowtop or "luxury" mattress just because it has an extra $40 worth of cheap pu foam! They laugh all the way to the bank because it is also the cheap pu foam that will get you coming back to buy a new bed in a year or two (or less)!
